R1100 Gearboxes are they all the same?
Question for the more technical-minded.

I have the offer of an BMW R1100S gearbox to replace the one on my R1100GS that I'm trying to sell so I can buy an R1200GS. Now, my intention was just to sell the bike on "FleaBay", be honest and 'fess up to the problem (which I have) and expect that the stupidly cheap reserve that I set (under 2K) would be enough to ensure that it sold. It seems thats not working as there is only one bid after nearly a week (i think the gearbox is scaring the bidders off) so i've formulated a plan B, which is to grab this R1100S gearbox, swap it into my R1100GS and relist on you-know-where. Now, i've looked at my trusty Haynes manual, and all the ratios appear to be the same, and all the references to different models appear to state "All Variants from 1994 onwards". i take this to mean that all the gearboxes were the same.
Is that the case?

I hope so because the dealer wont hold my new bike for a great deal longer....

Oh, my bike is a '95 GS and the donerbike is alledgedly an '02 plate with 18000 miles on it.

My gearbox self destructed last year and i ended up getting one off an 850R. from all the looking around i did and checking ratios etc, they are the same.
just the rear diff thats different ratio. hopefully for you the 1100s will be the same.

1100S has an hydraulic clutch, and i think the mounting points are different - - it's no good for the 1100GS .

1100S is not the same generic line as the 1100/850

Thanks for the info men.
It looks like i'm shagged on plan B. Time come up with a plan C (need to get 2000quid for it somehow) or to drop the price, give away a bargain and hope I can release the difference from somewhere else.....

Gutted.

Hold on. Brain has just woken up. Arw you saying that you fitted an 850R box and it was ok? If so did fall in or did you have to modify it to make it fit?

any more info on this would be helpful because I need to find a way forward that wont mean spending 750quid on bike i'm selling!

As dazco says -the 850 ( pre-2001) and 1100 are all the same gearboxes

Steoptoe's correct of course.

1150 gearbox's won't fit an 1100. Any gearbox from an R1100* (anything) except the 'S' should fit, as should any R850 gearbox. The ratio's are all the same, it was the final drive's that differed from bike to bike.

hiya Damo, i fitted an 850 box into my 1100 last year, exactly the same. all that was slightly different was that i needed to take the gear indicator off the back of the old 1100 box and fix it to the 850 box. all the mountings etc are the same.
got the box from someone on here £350, its since done about 12k miles.
Get a post on here in the wanted section. you might be lucky, I had to wait about 3 weeks before one came along
