For sale is my 2004 BMW R1200GS in the best colour. I am selling her as I have just treated myself to a newer LC model trying to find the bike ‘balance’ between a new and older bike.

I purchased the GS about 3 years ago, and sold it to Mike of this Parish, as it developed a really nasty engine noise that I didn’t want to take on. (it transpires it was a main engine bearing – more later but the old one is included in the sale). I recently bought it back off him

Anyway – to the bike.

Mileage is 32k, and a new MOT 3 weeks ago. There is a comprehensive documented service history to 2022, and following that serviced regularly by both local specialists, and fresh oils following the engine rebuild.

I have a box file full of receipts / bills / old MOT’s and even the original purchase receipt.

So – to the engine rebuild – The engine was stripped down, and the noise identified as a main bearing. This was replaced, along with the 6 other bearings within the engine (because they could be – not because they were failing, so precautionary) A new clutch / clutch housing etc, and a recon gearbox was also fitted, with the throttle bodies also balanced. In short, the engine runs beautifully, and with the new clutch too should mean it will run for years without any issues.

The ABS unit was professionally removed in 2018 at a cost of £500. Brakes works beautifully without it.

New tyres have done less than 600 miles (Conti attack 3). New discs and disc washers are also fitted (sub story below advert as to why the 7k mile £400 Brembo discs were replaced, and it also comes with a spare set of wheels and a spare fuel tank)

T Tech have rebuilt both (non ESA) suspension unit, set to a rider weight of 110KG – as well as upgrading the internals of both units. This was a £400+ job in Feb 24, so still under warranty with Tomas I believe until Feb 26.

New battery, and brake pads, and a new MOT. Full set of vario luggage – the topbox vario element has been fixed into the higher position. Aux lights fitted from new. A rear mudslinger, plus Cymarc spray deflector fitted too. A switched twin USB socket is fitted within the cockpit area for phone charging etc. Original tool kit is with the bike

For touring comfort, it has the taller Wunderlich screen, winglets and a Sargent seat (extremely good seat). The original screen and seat come with it too. A new 7’ Carplay unit is fitted, and is compatible with both Android and Apple – again brilliant for Nav as you can actually see it! A cheapish 4k action cam (with remote and phone app) is also included – its not too bad but not Gopro quality)

In summary, this really is a bike you can jump on and ride anywhere in confidence – it’s as close to analogue (like an 1150) as you can get but with a wallop of extra power and better handling. Aesthetically, very tidy but obviously not brand new! I am very tempted to keep her as she really is totally sorted, however I don’t need two GS bikes (even though I may want them).

I am looking to get my money back,so, I would like £3500 for the bike please, to include all the bits listed above – I will put it on the general market next week for more if not sold to a fellow enthusiast here.

Please let me know if you have any questions

Thanks

Alex

hopefully a video link here:

Sub Story – riding it back from Wales, the forks were juddering under braking – something it didn’t do when I owned it. As the Brembo discs had only done 7k miles, I immediately suspected wheel bearings, and convinced myself there was play in the front wheel (even thought he wheel bearings had also been replaced 7k miles ago) As luck would have it, I picked up a spare set of wheels locally (the chap also gave me a fuel tank for some reason) and rather than faff around with bearing replacement got the front tyre and discs swapped over, along with the floating washers etc. I then cried a bit as it didn’t make a jot of difference. Onto the Sharpie pen colouring the disc, and lightly cable tied brake cable. This quickly showed a warped disc – I can only imagine when the tyres were changed the wheel was carefully dropped onto the disc. Anyhow new discs now and all good – and a spare Brembo disc to boot 😊

Bike market seems extremely slow. I've got two bikes up at the moment; one I expected to sell easily, and would have been at a significantly higher price last year.

Things seem to have changed.

Market is in the loo.

People wanting decent money for bikes as belts tighten.

Fewer people wanting to buy, as belts tighten.

Been that way for a while, looks like a tight year again in the bike market, a bit like last year.

Ok. Clearly an incorrect price at this moment in time.
Let's say £3250, with all the extras, or £3100 if you don't want the spare wheels/ disc/ tank or Sargent seat, and Wunderlich touring screen with ?
How does that sound?
