BMW R50 from 1960

Hello

I’ve just bought a BMW R50 from 1960 in a box (to be more precise in several boxes)
I’m planning to rebuilt it during the next months and I for now I have two questions

What colors were available in 1960 to paint these bikes? Dover white is out of the question and I would like something different then the usual black…
I do like Granada red but since in the future I’m planning to add a sidecar I’m afraid that it will end looking like the fire brigade bike!
Some suggestions (together with a picture) would be very helpful.

Second question: I’m used to buy parts to my R100GS in several online stores like motorworks and some others. Any suggestions?

I've only even seen black with white stripes. Stripes painted by ladies and by hand with a lining brush.

I think there was a rang of colours that the Earles fork BMWs came in in apart from Black and the white you mentioned. I believe there was red, blue, green and probably others.

One of the guys just bought an immaculate one of these for a song, from the widow of the ex owner, who was moving out a nice collection.

He had been advised by the tech gurus from the BMW owners club, who had paid the lady fair prices for the rest of the collection, not to go near it as it had a terminal engine knock, and would would probably require a replacement crank and extensive engine work.

My advice was to ignore them and follow his instincts, and he did so and bought it anyway.

Turns out the problem was the nuts on the short studs which hold the barrels had slackened off, and the barrels were rocking. There was a thick gasket there which may have been the cause of the problem.

He ground down a ring spanner to suit and a hour later he had a bike so quiet that I had to put my hand over the exhaust to check that it was running.

My old man painted a Morris Minor in BLMC Wedgewood Blue - which is pretty close to the blue some of the Earles forked BMW's came in.

I am restoring a 1962 R60/2 and a 1961 R27 at the moment and two jobs to look out for (and expensive) are cleaning the oil slingers on the crank and finding someone to reline the wheel hubs if the brake linings are worn.
