My suit is getting pretty old and has been washed quite a few times - anyone ever waterproof the outer suit using a spray or similar?

Pointless, isn't it?
The waterproof layer is the inner removable liner, so I was told. The outer just gets soggy and heavy.

I realise the waterproof is in the inner layer but on my very old BMW Kalahari suit (the same construction) the outer used to be a bit more waterproof.

I've used Nikwax tech wash to clean mine, then used Nikwax TX spray proofer. The advantage with the spray is you can focus on the areas that get wettest

It works in so far as it doesn't soak up water like a sponge any more, but still needs the liner to be properly waterproof

The more the outer resists water the better. Gets less heavy and dries quicker. TX Direct after Tech Washing first

Despite its strange construction, I have never got wet in the rally suit even in torrential rain. Wash it with Nikwax stuff (outer and inner gore tex liner which needs different stuff) and it will be fine.

Any of you guys had problems washing the trews with the suede / leather knee bits?

No, just wash the same as the jacket with Nikwax Tech wash. Just be patient drying the trousers and don't be tempted to use direct heat like a radiator or tumble dryer, or the leather will go stiff. Drip dry is best, on a breezy sunny day ideally.

The outer and inner can be washed and re proofed with the same products.
