Curious as to whether to go down the BMW manual or Haynes online route as I teach myself more about home maintenance. Has anyone bought a copy (official - not pirated)? If so, how much was it, how long did it take to get it and is it any good?

Depends on where your abilities are at. The reprom will tell you what needs done but not how to do it in fine detail. It is intended for techs who are supposed to know what they are doing In the first place. You don't need to be mechanic of the year but it is assumed you know how to use tools and know your way around a bike. Barring that it has every conceivable measurement and setting you could ever need.
Was several years ago that I bought one but it was around £55

I have one of the better BMW unofficial ebay versions of their manual but covers all the models and is very good its basically what the techs use at the dealerships and shows step by step every procedure prints service sheets and tells you any special tools needed its very good as for Haynes they are not as good as they used to be

No idea it runs from the disc and has no installer I run it from an image on my PC using W10 it was about £40 and came from Poland when I bought it so its not the same as some of the cheaper ones you see its called the Repair and Service Data

I only found a cheap version that runs from disc, so giving it a go for £10 uk seller,
Can report back if the Op is interested, its the 09/15 version for wc gs/gsa
Roamer,

Only problem with BMW disc is it tends to rely on BMW service tools for many operations. Even owners manual does this.

Haynes is just okay but picture quality is surprisingly poor and finding your way around can be tiresome(why can't they index everything by page numbers rather than chapter and subsection). Useful guide though.

I appreceate the haynes book has workarounds for many special tools,
Its a pity the picture quality and reference format is considered poor,
I suppose the two formats together would be good , i might buy one as well , as the disc was cheap,
My gs is in its second year and out of warranty in october and considering home servicing,
I allready change the fd oil and service the brakes anually, as previous bmws
Regardless of experience knowing what to do clearly is a great benefit,

Roamer
