BMW Response re GS/A Seats

Got to admit, for such an expensive bile the seat is pretty naff (in my opinion anyway). My friend recommended that I got a gel insert fitted to the standard seat and after trying his (GS Adv) I was converted. Popped down to see Lee at Viking Motorcycle Seats near Brands Hatch, junct 3 M25, booked by phone, rode over, free tea / coffee and an hour later all done. Gel insert was £80 and very well finished. There are other options such as the addition of memory foam but he has numerous GS owners visiting him and most go for just the gel insert. I only had the main seat done but all details and prices on the web site here;

(Lee did say that the foam in the GS was top quality but too soft for those of a larger build, I think he may be metioned already on the forums somewhere)

That's the point I guess...we're all different sizes and shapes, so will have different experiences on the same product.

Mines Hard !!!

Got a low seat from a standard GS on my GSA and its bloody uncomfortable ! As stated in another post,I took out a Multistrada for a test ride and the seat was great,at that time I asked why it is that BUMW cant get theirs right, so yes I'm one of the geezers that think its crap, and judging from a lot of posts on this forum there are a lot of others too.
One shouldnt have to go out buying Sergeant seats or Airhawks or anything else when one pays a lot of dosh for a bike thats supposed to be a long distance mile muncher !!
And before any of you wigs tell me to buy a Multistrada if I aint happy, you can go and F*** yourselves cos I dont want one !!! :D:D

I think the point for those of us that feel that the seat is crap we need to tell BMW. According to their response no one else has pointed this out to them.

Adv Seat

500-600 mile days on my 06 Adv no bother, slight num bum but as far as I can see not worth spending more for little gain. I will not be doing more miles in one day. Even the wife said the passenger seat was comfy so thats a plus.
Same story with my old 1150Gs.

Rang Melvyn today and taking the seats up to him on saturday morning. 2 hr turnaround which is good.

I'll update when I've tried them out. Thanks for all the advice guys :thumb2

Let us know how you get on with them :thumb

Surely this has more to do with the shape of your arse, length of your body/legs and your total weight as opposed to a fault with a seat?

There are simply too many variables imposed by the rider for BMW to consider reworking a seat a worthwhile project. At the end of the day due to its lack of adjustment it's never going to produce the levels of comfort you get from a car seat :augie

Perhaps a slight acknowledgement from BMW that comfort might be a consideration on a bike marketed as a long distance touring machine might not go amiss

Several bike manufacturers offer a gel seat option so that could be a start..............

I bought an Airhawk so problem solved :D

My bike came with a touratech Item called Kahedo. Best seat ever it is std not the low version. Had a low sargent which I found uncomfortable not enough foam I thought. Yet the std sargent I had on my 1150 was superb. I think BMW seats are good materials just the shape they seem to throw the pelvis forward with your nuts sliding towards the tank all the time.:tears. So I guess it's what keep us all a having something to moan about. :D

How can they justify such a crap seat which limits you to 100 miles and yet the tank can take you 350 to 400 miles easy:nenau
get yourself a TT seat matey. Not cheap but 200 to 300 miles is no problem now.

Sorry you didn't like the original GSA seat, but I don't think it is crap at all, I can ride all day long no problem...

Gelastic Pads

Let us know how you get on with them :thumb

Had a nice drive up to Coventry yesterday morning and went to Melvyn's house. A nice guy, very chatty and a fellow motorcyclist. Left the two seats with him at 9.20am and by 10.45am he had called me and I was picking them up again. The riders seat had been resculptured at the front to make it a tiny bit higher and the gelastic pad inserted over the original foam and the original cover put back on. The shape of the seat had altered but only very slightly. I could feel the difference in the seat by pressing into it. The pillion seat had the gelastic pad put over the original foam and the original cover replaced.

So. Is it any better? Had 8 hours out on the bike today with the wife and we both agree that it is much much better. The support now seems to be spot on. Not too soft and not that firm that it gives me arse ache. The slight resculpturing of the riders seat at the front seemed much better also and felt as though I was seated firmly with no edging forward under braking or at any other time.

I agree that we are all different and that some find the original seat to be ok. However, there are many on here who go for the Corbin or the Sargent seat because they are not happy with the original.

Melvyn charged me £130 for the two seats. He can reshape seats according to your wishes and fit different covers if you wish.

So personally I am very happy and feel I have saved a few hundred quids by not going for the alternative seats.

I have attached his details if anyone is interested.

Glad you like them :thumb I've not really had the chance to test them properly so that's encouraging :)

Melvin did the same with my seats, a slight change in the riders seat and the Gelastic pads.....

I reckon if I still grumble I must be getting soft ;)

CHEAP FIX...........
If you suffer any discomfort after hour in the saddle why not try wearing a pair of padded cycling shorts under your gear?:augie

£6.99 at ALDI they are of special offer this week. Good quality in Coolmax.

May seem simple but I have spent hundreds of pounds in the past on aftermarket seats and at that price most be worth a punt.

By the way I still cannot get over the difference my Acc Mod has made to the bike...Fantastic.!:topic

Just had my seat 'done' by Melvyn, the stuff he uses certainly looks better than the standard 'gel' inserts, need to go on an extended ride but initially the seat is now a much better height/shape and feels so much better/comfortable (mine was the factory low which was a bloody awful shape, lots of backache on longer rides :()
