BMW Spot/driving light Warning, heads up!

I purchased the stupidly expensive BMW LED spots that integrate into the switch gear......don't ask me why!

Well I have just found out when switched on they automatically switch off the dipped beam and running lights if I understand the riders manual.

Seems bazaar to me as I thought the idea was more light to be more visible!

So a heads up if you want to spend the £400 plus on the BMW spots they automatically shut down the £700 LED headlight.......ahhhhhhhhhhh
 
It would be good to clarify this ... I have them on order too on the basis that the LED spots are used with the new LED running light to give plenty of light to maximise the bike visibility. Info from Rainbow was that a separate switch would activate the LEDs alongside the new running light and headlight.

So, can anyone with the new GS and the LED spots answer the question ?
 
I've also ordered these, but they haven't come into stock yet. Can we get clarification, as I'll cancel them if that's the case? Where did you hear about this OP?
 
I read this in the owners manual, it is not easy to understand, so my interpretation could be wrong.

The dealer is closed until Tuesday so I can't check.......and they probably don't know.

Anybody read the owners manual and have a view?

I think you may be wrong, as it would be a bit daft, but stranger things have happened. Let us know what they say.:thumb
 
It goes to great length talking about how the auto light function switches between headlight and spots and how one is on and switches off when the other comes on..........no words on disabling the function.......I will read it again later. Also dip switches off. Maybe it was a bad time to read it Sunday morning!
 
I do believe this is the route our cousins over in Brussels are taking us down ..... :blast

Do the spots switch on and off with one of the existing buttons, or is there an additional button, as per the previous GS?

To my way of thinking, spots (spotlamps) are long range lights that augment the main beam. So, if this is what they are (and not auxiliary, fogs or running lights) then maybe its right that the dipped beam goes off when you press the high beam switch.

Almost certainly.

One set of these will be called DLR (Daylight running lights) and there are laws about how and when they are supposed to be on.

Whether there's a way to bypass it in the system or via plugging in the diagnostic machine, who knows :nenau

EDIT....from 2012, all NEW cars (note, not bikes) MUST have DLRs.
The DLRs must turn off, or dim, when the headlights are turned on.

The theory is that the DLRs have to be bright enough to be visible in daylight, so they are likely to be too bright aty night and could dazzle people.

There is currently no requirement for new bikes to be fitted with DLR's, but I guess BMW are just getting ahead of the game.
 
I have yet to see a picture of the LC with its LED DLRs on and dipped beam/aux lights.

I'm sure the Bike first ride test mentioned this as well - still in bed though so can't be arsed to go and check......

Seems like a good idea to me. The DLR should be for daylight and headlights for night. If you spent 700 on headlights I recon you wont be short of light. And if you have a high viz on as well then you will be seen at all times of the day and night.
I begin to see why you wont get your bike for months.

Re-read the owners manual and found a page with auxilary headlight instructions in addition to daytime running light instructions

So the summary as follows

1. The auxiliary headlights (the expensive led spot lights in other words, although no picture is shown) are on with the dipped headlight.

2. The Daytime Running Lights (DRL), if activated switches off the dipped headlights and auxiliary headlights

3. If the DRL is switched on the auxiliary headlights cannot be switched on.

4. The DRL can be set to automatic or manual.

Pay attention at the back!

5.The DRL is more visible in daytime than the dipped headlight so the DRL switch toggles between the two, ie DRL and dipped h/light.

6. When on automatic setting, which is deep in the menu, the lights are controlled via a light sensor and you will be blissfully controlled by men in Berlin

So you can have the auxiliary expensive spot lights ( auxiliary headlights in BMW speak)on with the dipped headlight but not with the DRL

Apologies for the previous confusion caused by not reading all the pages in the owners manual

Now you all deserve a wee dram.

Thanks for the clarification.:thumb I assume that the DRL is the horseshoe shaped light if the bike has LED lights fitted?
