The nice people at BMW are replacing my starter motor and fly wheel , i took my bike in to day for some new panier's to be fitted ,I asked them to check the bike over as I was going to the Dakar rally , they said that the starter didn't sound good , I thought it was OK , but when they pulled out the starter they said there was damage to the fly wheel, and they would replace the lot under warranty , well done BMW sunderland , any one els had this problem

Interesting, I know a few people incuding myself that have had problems with the flywheel and starter-motor... apparently my was as a result of water ingress, but I find it hard to see how one can lead to the other.

To be honest, I'm not surprised they fail having looked at mine, the teeth don't look that robust.

I had heard romour that BMW are sourcing a new supplier, but it's only that... romour.

water damage !

when they said water damage, what did they say , as I went in a ford about a foot deep ,

I didn't know it was damaged

I didn't know that it was damaged , they told me it was, but went in the ford week last Sunday , :spitfire

At least they've replaced it under warranty...

I might be wrong, but there seems to be a link between the two events, just seems really odd to me, I can't understand why it should be

did you stall your bike in the water

my be , if you hydro jacked your bike , as in take water in to the pistons and hit the starter button , still I can not see it been a problem , you would just take out the plugs and flush it out wouldn't you, as they did on the river crossing on the long way round:nenau

Yeah exactly, even with hydrolic lock it seems a bit harsh?? I guess something has to give, but mine lost only one tooth that I could see.

I could kind of understand it if you hit the starter when the engine was runnign, but I thoght these things are designed to protect against damage then?

funny the same on mine

thats what happened to mine , wonder if they are not hardened to proper standard, as BMW were quick to note that their was a problem with mine and I never said there was a fault .:eek
