BMW Tank Bag

Hi All

Anyone got the BMW tank bag?

Looks good and seems to be well made (if expensive), but anyone used one in anger?

It seems to be designed to convert into a backpack, but the base looks so curved I can't imagine how it would work!!

I think it's fine and works well (several thousand miles of usage).

Previous reports seem to indicate it may not be for the "shorter" person.

Not sure about the backpack - I don't remember getting any extra straps with mine

Does it scratch the tank?

It doesn't convert to a backpack... but it has a detatchable external bag at the rear which can be worn as a bum-bag. Trouble is, if you are 'of ample proportions', like me, you have to take this off 'cause it interferes with the belly/gravity interface! Size-wise it's huge, you'll be amazed at what you can carry in there... and still see over the top.
So, if you've got a large gut, and short arms, I'd say forget it.
My only complaints are that the map pocket is just too narrow to take an A4 size map/paper, and even when you get a map in, it's hard to read the bottom half... because it's too near you.
As for waterproofness, it's 100%, and I've done several days of hard rain with it on.
And finally, it doesn't scratch the bike, at least, not yet!
I got mine off eBay for £99, and I've seen a couple more advertised since at that price.

Have been seeing the BMW tankbag at the shop - is too big for my needs. I bought the FAMSA Endoro MAX tankbag. see www.famsa.it and www.bikersandmore.de

I agree that the BWM bag does it's job really well.

The bag itself is waterproof but the detachable goodies bag isn't, anything in there get's soaked!

I have no problems with A4 sheets in the top, although the 'sticky' nature of the plastic makes getting it in a bit fiddly, just like Ortleib map pouches. As for looking at maps/route plans on the move, that's what I have a GPS for.

No belly problems either and the bag doesn't obstruct my view at all.

Well worth the money in my opinion, I'm a great tank bag fan anyway and have been since before they were fashionable.

So long as you don't allow any grit between bag and tank there doesn't seem to be a marking problem.

Backpack? Don't think so.

My BMW tank bag is almost always on the bike, and has done over 17,000 miles.

so far,

it has never leaked,
it has not scrached the tank,
it holds lots of stuff,

BUT

I swear about it every time I have to fill up, the way it fixes at the front is very tricky. You have to clip it forward, the bag on a 1150 clips backwards which is much easier.

There is evidence of wear on the front clip.

The Sat nav bracket was rubbing on the bag, and was almost through it befor I noticed and ajusted the bracket.

On the whole a good product, a couple of flaws in the design.

I can't seem to find any literature on the tankbank on the BMW site. Can anyone help me locate it on the internet?

I've used mine a fair bit over the past year. Probably about 10k with it.

Big enough to fit most things (including a 15" laptop) but doesn't get in the way. Raised off the tank which protects both the tank and the stuff inside. Totally waterproof, including the map pocket (tested to the extreme ...). Fits easily and securely. Attachment is neat when it's not being used. No sign of wear at all yet.

Downsides are that it is a bit unwieldy off the bike, although for what I use it for that's not a problem. And, being from BMW, it's a bit pricey.

I'd recommend it.

Great piece of kit. I used to leave the panniers & top box on all the time for carrying waterproofs, spare gloves, camera, ear plugs etc etc but since having the tankbag i've taken them off. Totally waterproof too.

Can someone help me by telling me what the price is for the BMW Tank bag. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Great bag, a sod to get on and off to refuel, it's that front clip !
Being a cheapskate I use my PDA / gps in the map pocket with the rest of the gubbins in the bag. Works a treat, who needs fancy brackets,

Hi mate. Can't remember the price (came with the bike ) but it's all in one piece apart from the included bum bag so all in price. £160ish seems to hover in my head but no promise
As a bonus the bag has a waterproof sewn in liner with a drawstring at the top so even the odd drip that gets past the zip does no harm, I keep a "sheepskin" Vetbed waterproof sheepskin type thingy in mine which supports the map pocket when in the bag and cossets my bum when on the seat !!

Just paid £150 at Park Lane and yes it includes all the fittings. Very pleased with it too. Fitting it is a bit fiddly, but I'm sure with practice I will be able to do it in a few seconds.

I initially thought it converted into a rucksack, see the top of the thread, but it turns out I was confused because of the literal translation from German, it is officially called a tank rucksack!!
