I have a 'loan' one on my bike at the moment and was a bit surprised at the 'loose' fit on the base plate.

The locating lugs (nearest seat) kind of rattle allowing the whole box to wobble about. I have to say though that I didn't notice anything riding it the 40 miles or so home from the dealer.

Is this normal or have they given me a worn one? It would be nice to know as I have one on order.

Cheers

Top box has been modified recently-ish ... not a huge difference but the newer type sits a bit more snug on the rack - I would assume if you're using the dealers demo top box it is one of the originals. Never supplied one under warranty for falling off the back if that helps!

Rack remains the same throughout production.

I have the later version bought about two months ago. At the time I ordered it in late April there were none in the UK, apparently BMW were in the process of making the new version. I thought I'd made a mistake ordering one when a mate at work showed me his. The box was loose on the base plate with play both side to side and back to front. Mine is tight on the base plate with no play at all. When he saw mine e went back to the dealer (Park West, I think) and they changed it for the new version without question.

Thanks guys.

Although I'm sure it would not fly off, the loose fit did concern me, especially considering the money they cost.

I'll be much more reassured by a snugger fitting.

Now, once the dealer manages to get hold of an alarm (BMW supply problem apparently) the bike will be back in for top box and alarm fitting.

Coz,

I take it you're waiting for the retrofit genuine alarm?

It's been on back order for a very, very long time

On the plus side, at least one I had on order for a couple of months finally turned up last saturday so I'd assume back orders are now being filled and your dealer should have it in stock soon if it isn't already there.

You're quite right. I had actually ordered it when I ordered the bike but it was 'missed' off the job sheet. However, maybe that was intentional if they had none available.

Had the bike about a month now and the alarm and top box were all paid for when I collected the bike.

Thanks for the info anyway, hopefully the dealer will get the parts in soon...

I was concerned whilst touring, having read this posting. Initially I wrapped a flat webbing strap around the topbox and plate to tension it securely in place when full. By the end of the trip, I didn't bother and despite its 'loose' fit on the mounting plate and some dodgy Irish road surfaces, it didn't fall off.
