I was wondering how to make use of that bit of space in the left hand pannier that fits around the exhaust. I was thinking 'warning triangle, hi-viz jackets, tools, torch ... etc' ... but how to stop it all rattling about and falling into the box when I remove the bag ...

I was thinking 'fix a sheet of aluminium to the side', somehow ... or 'make a box' out of something ...

But Bruce, over at the Max Bikes forum, had a much better idea ... he makes things out of metal ... and he made me this out of aluminium from a template I supplied to him:

If you want one ('course you do! :D ) register at Max Bikes and PM Bruce ... the forum could do with the presence of a few more Beemer owners (I've been holding my own against the odds, but support would be nice  )

Cheers

Paul

It looks ok,but what can you put in there and more importantly how can you retrieve small items as it's too narrow to get your hand in ?

Also,I don't see it as wasted space as the OE inner bag expands around this area,so I just back shoes or something in the bottom left pannier bag and then softer stuff which then naturally fills the larger space above.

Hi Arsey ('Arsey'?)

Well, I found that the OE bags didn't expand into this area because they don't make the height of the box ... and when you roll the top closures to make them watertight they get even smaller.

So I got rid of my OE bags and bought a pair of KJD liners, which are more structured (they have zip pockets on the tops and sides) ... anyhow the space is not too narrow to get your hands into (well, unless yours are like bunches of bananas ;) ) ... actually it's 65mm wide and between 85mm and 135mm deep ... so a very useable space :thumb

So what goes in? At the moment, and in this order, a fuel bladder - 'cos you never know - a Leatherman tool, a warning triangle and a torch. None of which rattles about or falls into the box when I remove the luggage:

Other times there's room for a chain:
