BMW trying to wriggle out of battery warranty claim

I was asked to haul the old battery all the way back from Morocco (no light weight when I had all the other stuff with me from my eight week stay), so I wasn't too happy to be then told "it's not covered by warranty".

Anyway, the good news is that I believe a resolution is in the pipeline.

If your in the RAC or AA see their legal man, if not go to the trading standards at your local council, if nothing else it might kick the dealer into action.
 
... I have loads of crap wired up to my battery, all via a Centech fuse panel. Battery died at 8 weeks and 5500 miles ... clearly a dodgy Duracell.

... BMW Emergency Assist called out, checked my add-ons with a meter to make sure there was no unswitched current draw and, having pronounced the attachments sound, proceeded to swap out the battery under warranty.. Seemed like a reasonable approach to take.

... The 12ADVs have the larger alternator, but the OEM battery doesn't brim with robustness and is the same as the 'stock' GS. So at 40K Miles, heavy cycling because of the all accessories, I'm not surprised it gave up. But I'm just not sure why they wouldn't change it under the normal 2 year warranty term it's an easy spot, BMW have always been very quibble free on any warranty issue I've faced.

Thank you, but I already have a new battery, kindly sourced by GRingo in Spain.

What annoys me is BMW's stance. How many people are running their GPS systems off the direct battery connection supplied by Garmin blissfully unaware that the battery is then not covered by warranty?

I got my dealer to wire in the fuse box for my added GPS and intercom. If you do this your self you run the risk of BMW saying no to any battery claims and I don't blame them for doing that. I can plug in what i like now knowing BMW
installed the fuse box.

Is it BMW that are refusing to replace the battery or the dealer?

My battery failed "just" within the warranty and the dealer replaced it under warranty with no hassle.

Incidentally the bike has an Autocom, HID aux lights, satnav and cable for charging phone. All self installed via a Centech fuse panel.
 
This all sounds a bit like hard drives and the computer industry, the battery may have a long manufacturers warrenty but the dealers are not prepared to change.

I would take the details off the battery (bet it just says BMW :blast ) and email the manufacturers customer services dept, with luck they will then arrange a replacement either through the post or even via the Dealers. Even though you have had "fair wear and tear" from it the manufacturers usually put 3 years on these things, probably because they know 90% of the failures in years 2-3 will never find their way back:rob
 
My last bike, a 1998 Honda Pan European, was still on it's original battery when I sold it last year. It would be ridden for 4 days and then laid up for 6 and then ridden for another 4 days - Started first time, every time, no trickle charger used.

So why, 10 years on, despite improvements in battery technology since 1998, can't BMW fit decent batteries to their bikes?
 
Sell it, stop moaning and get summert else. I ve had 4 faults in 18 months,(2nd 1200gs) i sold mine after 16,000 miles and thought nothing could beat it in the real world, until i rode a r1200s. **** me, you could race this thing at the TT. The best bike I have owned. Stop moaning you fanny.
Mind I did get one for free under warrenty. :)
 
My bike wat made in May 06 then sat in a crate till May 07 when I bought in in KL, Malaysia. We have warm weather all year, my bike has covered 13k km in the time I've had it, my riding is mostley weekends as I travel for work or once or twice a month I ride it for work to Singapore a round trip of about 750km.... so its not been left unused for more than five days.

First new battery was the day I picked up... they couldn't start it at the dealers. Then after eight months the second battery gave up the gohst, it also took out the CANbus which needed resetting. Lights are on all the time as its the law for bikes in Malaysia, but I have no electrical add-ons.

On both occasions there was no warning, directly from ok to not even a click, as the dealer ship told me they had started the bike a hour before I arrived to pick it up.

BMW have replaced without question, but frankly I would expect at least 2 years, my previous Harley that really was a sunday to the pub bike lasted over five years with rarely a long journey and never a recharge (it was twice the size though..)

Clearly there is weight saving and a little cost saving here.

As BMW sell heated vests, GPS Systems etc which all draw power fron the battery can they prove that a BMW badged product is superior than another brand and doesnt cause any problems?... I dont think so meaning the arguement that it has to have BMw branded items if weak after all the BMw nav is simply a Garmin isnt it.
