What do you guys think about independent servicing v's BMW in relationship to re-sale value?

I am quite sure there are independents out there that will take more care about servicing your bike than some dealers, okay while the bike is in warranty one really needs to take it to the dealer but what about when the warranty is expired?

Basically what I am asking is it going to make a huge difference to resale value of say a 6year GS that has its first 3yrs at BMW then the next 3yrs at an indy?

An independent should be able to provide a receipt or invoice for work carried out? Keep these as proof, along with parts invoices for service kits to pass on to any future owners.

I do all my own servicing & keep a record in the form of an Excel spreadsheet & keep all receipts etc. When I sold my GSX-R1100 last year, the buyer was happy to accept these as a Service record.

Robbo,

The only problem you would have is when trading in to a BMW dealer. They would say that as they have no official BMW service history that they can't take it in part exchange, or they might offer a reduced value to you because of this. I serviced my 1150 myself, and when looking around recently, one dealer suggested this would knock £500 off the trade in, when compared to a similar bike with a full BMW service history. When balanced against 4 years servicing (1 12 k 1 24K and 3 6 K services), I was well ahead of the game in terms of what I would have spent on official services.

You can print off the BMW service schedules from their website. When I sold my 1150 2 weeks ago, I was able to show the completed records to the prospective buyer. I was also able to show him the written record I have maintained with regards to all running costs. He was happy to accept these. And of course, I sold the bike for a lot more than I was offered in part exchange:D

Thats very interesting guys thank you,

Steve,

Do you have an example of the kind of spreadsheet you are talking about? if so could you email it to me?

Bob,

I wondered if the reduced value would outway the cost of getting it serviced by the stealers. What website can you print the service schedules from?

Anyone got a contact for dealers stamps :grndevil

is there not some European law regarding, having to have your bike serviced by a dealer to maintain the warrenty ?

As far as I can remember as long as you show you used the correct and recommended parts and stuck to the service schedule and procedures, there was nothing a dealer or anybody else could do with regards to reducing the trade in value or any warrenty claim.

I think you need the official servicing if you want warranty claims honoured. This thread was also about bikes out of warranty.

There's nothing to stop the dealer offering you less for a bike serviced elsewhere, up to you whether to acept that offer or not.

service schedules for all BMW bikes here....

May be just me, but I can't find the R1200GS in the list.

he little gem of info I was refering to.

The dealers can no longer hold you to ransom over servicing/warranty (EEC block exemption regs.)ie. any 'competent' service person can carry out servicing work, so long as they use OEM parts and adhere to the manufacturers maintainance schedule.Provided that a warranty claim doesn't arise from incorrect service procedures, it has to be honoured.
I've recently had this confirmed 'from the horses mouth'......also, they cannot withold access to either information/data or specialist equipement (Digitech) but can charge the appropriate/fair amount for such access.

I'm sure theres more info regarding this out there on the 'tinternet' but can't be arsed trying to find it :P
, and I always buy 2nd hand bike so warranty/servicing doesn't come into the equation.

cheers

I've 6/7 BM's from new and never once has the subject of how /why/who serviced them come up at change bike time. How the bike looked was the important factor.

I think the fact that I also run BMW cars may be swaying my judgement here because personally I wouldn't buy a secondhand 4wheel beemer without a full dealer service history but then a 530 is slightly more complex than an 1150GS.

Well it looks like it may be an independent, I'll have to speak to Ronno I think he knows someone close to me that is good.
