BMW's new stance on shaft drive issues

It's not a new stance in the UK. In the UK we had these letters a year ago and my R1200RS shaft was replaced last May. There are multiple threads here on the topic.

The new bit is that they have just got around to writing to owners in the USA of the R1250 bikes as they phased the rework so as not to overwhelm workshops. R1200LC owners in the US had letters at the same time as the UK rollout as I know of R1200RS owners in the US who have had replacements.

Why do they need to be replaced ?
