hi

As I continue looking for a suitable jacket for an all-weather rider and commuter (but not big travels) I wanted to know whether anyone uses full body armour with a normal/everyday jacket instead?

What's the general thought and any recommendations?

thanks

I have forcefield pro shirt and shorts with a set of forcefield limb tubes for the knees -
I prefer it to the built in armour in most jackets and trousers etc
Excellent gear but way too much of a faff on to use for commuting everyday.

I have the Icon dkr jacket and trousers that are waterproof, warm and dead easy to put on (the trousers go over your jeans) for commuting

Always wear my Forcefield armour shirt, then my bike jackets over the top with their armour removed, The armour in the shirt stays put much better than if it were in a jacket.

The only time I keep the armour in is when I wear my leather one piece, not so much an issue on the old Norton nowadays :D

Thanks.
I use rallye 3 trousers on the weekends and a Richa leather jacket.
Not a big fan of the latter hence I thought to combine a body armour with a "normal" comfortable jacket

https://www.planet-knox.com/product/track-motorcycle-vest-with-back-protector/ wear a short sleeved base layer, long sleeved thin thermal top over that, then the Knox vest - Textile jacket over that with a liner in winter and thats all you'll need even in freezing weather... The Knox is a very close fitting comfortable protector and a nice warm breathable vest all in one, I've sold several other back protectors having worn them just a few times because they feel bulky and uncomfortable, the Knox is the business precise close fitting and well worth the ££

Having never used such 'body armour' stuff does this also protect you from abrasion as well as provide impact protection to the usual shoulders/elbows/back/hips and knees?

the forcefield stuff wont - your outer layer/jacket needs to do that

Found a good deal on forcefield at snow&rock. Thinking of combining it with some normal jacket

As suggested, any outer jacket not designed for use on a bike will likely offer little if any abrasion protection. Maybe you won't slide far if you ever come off... :augie

Came across the Macna Cobalt while browsing jacket solutions recently - maybe something like that could be of interest to OP? Independent mesh inner jacket containing the armour (not dissimilar in principle to one of those armoured shirts/vests), with a waterproof outer shell that likely offers better abrasion protection than a TK Maxx special...

Interested to hear more - the layering system OP describes makes some sense to me, if the right gear is used.

Opted for the forcefield pro shirt. the breast protection might seem a bit bulky and akward at first. But feels sturdy and the other pads are just in the right places too. Surprisingly comfortable and fits neatly under any jacket of mine.
Now I am after an abrasion protective jacket for >£150: any suggestions?

Found this Acerbis

Any thoughts?

Isn't this the principle of the Halvarssons safety jacket? An under jacket with armour and choice of over jackets depending on season. Not sure that they still do this combination but they used to have two levels of protection...
