Bolt gone AWOL - need to identify it

The bolt shown below has fallen off, resulting in the gear change bush hanging off. It's Zip tied on for now.

Its weird as this has never happened to any of my previous 3 GS's.

Bike is an '11 R1200GSA.

The bolt isn't listed on the fiche either so I can't get the spec to buy one.

Does anyone have any idea what the spec is?

I haven't had a chance to get the tools out but suspect it may be the same as the bolt that holds the actual gear lever on which is listed on the fiche as item No. 5 which is M6 x 25 (p/n 07129903970). Will take if off on the w/e and try it.

But thought I'd try here first.

If I had a '11 plate bike that a bolt had fell off. I would be ringing the dealer to collect it and repair it.

If I had been out on it I may have even considered getting the bike recovered by BMW assist or whatever they call themselves.

If you are paying 14k you expect 14k service and bolts not to drop off.

Mate - thats a bit over the top; its only a trivial little bolt and the bike is perfectly useable. By the time you have managed collection and recovery, you may as well have sourced a bolt yourself. Zip ties are doing the job just fine as a temporary repair.

Ah, a breath of fresh air-sounds like common sense to me. Yes you can expect the dealer to sort it. I might be calling them and asking if they could provide said bolt but, recovery? bit over the top if the bike is still ridable. and if they said that it would take time to source a bolt then I too would look elsewhere for the bolt. Hope you get it fixed soon.

As you say, tie wrap fine for now - its just a retainer, not taking much load.

Dealer (Vines) already spoken to, to get one posted. As its a tiny bolt I couldn't give a monkeys who pays for it. But as bolt is not on the fiche it ain't easy. Hence this thread. Easiest route is local B&Q I fear.
 
I bet it's like you say an M5 or M4, go to a local engineering supplies shop and you'll find some nice stainless cap crews to replace it, in a selection of lengths

Whenever I go to a bike show or jumble, I always buy a £5's worth of stainless fasteners in vairious dimensions and types, so i've always got something lurking in the garage

It's essentially a cotter pin/grub screw, so bung in an M6 x25 and tighten it up hand tight and a bit....it it sits right, it's right, if it sticks out proud, try a x20 and see if that works......if it fits,does the job, is the right thread and has a sensible head on it (i.e you won't have to use a special tool or odd size allan key on it) then it's right, even if it's not identical to the OEM spec :thumb

Dob a bit of loctite on it and as Lo-Iq would say, 'Job's a carrot'

PS a small selection of 'standard sized' bolts gaffer taped under the seat in those little plastic moulding compartment is a good long term idea....8 or so bolts will fit 90% of problems.

Or even in a wee bag kept under the seat......Over the years i've helped out a few motorcyclists and even the odd cyclist if they've lost a nut or bolt!

I'm always happy to help someone out and never expect payment......Unless it's a hot chick in which case some 'steamy sex' is always acceptable:thumb

OK so it was a bit OTT

My point (badly made) was they should be fixing it.

I would have probably done the same myself. If I couldn't find a cable tie I'd have fired up the mig welder....

The bolt is a very odd male T25 I believe and I had the same problem. It is easily mistaken for a standard M bolt which can be rounded very easily as the screw is made out of aluminium. You are better off replacing the bolt with the equivalent T25 female which you can fix with the standard BMW toolkit and the same as all the trim screws on the bike.

- OK, got my tools out at the weekend.
- Bolt 5 fits (M6 x 25mm), but is 10mm too long.
- Which makes the missing bolt M6 x 15.
