Bolts sheared

Tried taking the rear mud deflector thing off my 1150 & sheared both bolts off (knew they would) Anyone know what size thread I can go up to when drilling & tapping a new thread so it doesn't foul the guard holes ? Cheers, Rick.

Start small and work up. If you keep it straight and central then you may be able to get them out without a full re-tap.
 
get a set of screw extrators and remove the stuck screws.

Don't use these tools of the devil. Only usually suggested by people who've never actually used them.

They've snapped off in the lugs, so no need to get too technical. Access is from both sides and it's only a few mm thick so just drill through the snapped bolts.

Yes I have used them! Sucessfully on several occasions! :P

You are correct in that they have a slight leaning towards the satanic! :augie :blast

Tools of the devil indeed.

When young and (more) stupid, I snapped a screw extractor off in the cylinder head of my GS550. Lead to an expensive appointment with an engineering shop and their spark erosion machine :rolleyes:

Precisely, you only have to break one once and you'll soon realise the folly of using them.

Thanks for the advice lads,I drilled the leftovers slightly eccentric & then collapsed the remains using a centrepunch on the bit that was sticking out proud.After a bit of fiddling it popped out like 80% of a helicoil.Tapped it out again & put copperslipped button head stainless back in, job done.Once again, Thanks boys.Rick.

Only used one once, then filed them under B for bin, the trouble is the extractor bites into the bolt and expands it outwards from the inside out like a rawlplug, which makes it even harder to remove.
Also tried that wurth freezer spray, freezes to minus 40 c, then the lubricant nips down the threads and releases the bolt, what total bollox.A waste of money imho.
A good way of removing a snapped off stud if you have a mig, is to weld a steel nut to the stump poking out, the heat from the weld, cracks the corrosion, the heat is very local,simply undo with a spanner, simples.
