Hi,

The paint is rubbing off of my frame on the left hand side.
On the right it is obviously OK because of the guard.

What is the best protection to stop this getting worse? Is it the simple stick on plastic sheet or there something better?

Thanks in advance.

Mrs Bear's boots wear the paint off the pillion heel guards. I've not yet found a solution to the problem. Painting the frame properly in the first place would have helped.

Mine rubbed off too, that was nearly 4 years ago & it hasn`t got any worse or gone rusty. As & when I sell the bike I`ll probably give it a lick of silver hammerite so it looks nice.

Don`t worry about it! :thumb2

Have a look at this on Ebay................................

BMW R1200GS/ADV FRAME HEEL SCUFF PLATE Item number: 150284735330

By god! :eek paint rubbed off the frame looks better than that!
Save your money, it won`t rust like in that picture cos your boot always rubs on it! :D

take large hammer and move frame away from boot. Alternatively stick good quality tape (the type that has fiber in it) onto offending frame area.... no more paint wear

It's a BMW you're riding. So you should be wearing slippers not boots ;)

HG do some very thick clear tape that can be stuck to the frame rails, I used it on my HP2 and it was good, alternatively a few layers of Duct tape (well it is the right colour)

What about using the "cable tidy" stuff you get from pc dealers? I'll take a look later as I have some in the garage.

Split some clear PVC hose of correct diameter cut to length fit over frame or purchase some aluminium plate of correct width find some plumbing clips of frame diameter, countersunk screws through from plate side clip in place job done.

I used similar on my H&B crash bars. Black Pond Hose Pipe-Anti Kink-25mm. Such as http://www.koibitz.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=910

The reinforced anti kink means it clips over the bar better. No problems with corrosion underneath either. The same 25mm stuff fits the section of the frame where the boot was damaging.

Cable tidy hose fits the thinner tube sections off the footrests perfectly as well as the space on the handlebars if you are wanting to protect from key scratching.

Get a grip man! bikes will get a little worn out. Next we'll be getting worrried about grips and footpeg rubbers getting a bit worn, how will with protect those:confused:. Lets face it as soon as the bike leaves the showroom, things start to wear :thedummy- it a well known fact.

Now i've seen some silly things on this website, but this takes the biscuit.
Forgive me if i'm wrong here, but crashbars are to protect the bike in the event of a crash - right?

So why on earth do you need to protect the protectors :nenau- i just dont get it:blast

Sod's law of course :rob If I hadn't put those on to protect the finish on the crashbars when I bought the bike then I would have probably dropped it by now  Had the tubing lying around anyway so didn't cost me anything.

My frame is fine so I don't bother protecting it (apart from WD40) even though I have the material to do it. Just letting folk know what they could use if that's what they choose to do.

Keeping a bike in good condition helps maintain its value. If you have so much money that you don't need to worry about possible resale value then lucky you. (Hopefully I will never need to sell my bike)
