We'll be flying to Split later this summer and looking at the map I see that to get to Dubrovnik from there by road involves a brief crossing in and out of Bosnia Herzegovina. We also expect to be visiting Montenegro and other places. So, after a particularly nasty civil war, (well, aren't they all?) are the border crossings of these recent enemies difficult, expensive, or even possible?

Crossing thru Bosnia on this road was a breeze
Just a quick glance at EU passport and waved on
Not asked for bike papers or insurance!

border

yup no problem with that border.
or, an extremely pleasant alternative is to get the small ferry
from drvenik onto peljesac which avoids the border.
please note though, on some maps there is a bridge marked
from peljesac back onto the main land, take my word for it,
the bridge does not exist!
very envious of your trip, went that way a couple of years ago.
prob. my favourate ever ride.

Thank you for that, nice to know. :thumb2

While I'm about it, do you have any suggestions as to what should we see in that area- Dubrovnik is, of course, a must, we are there for four days, Split for three, Mostar for perhaps a couple of nights, and the remainder of the fortnight is open to suggestions.

TIA :)
EDIT:Just seen your comment, Paul, we are flying there and hiring a car. But, some day, a bike, hopefully. :beerjug:

Last summer we rode down through Slovenia to Croatia and Dubrovnik then back through Bosnia with a night stop in Mostar.

All great countries and highly recommend them. As noted there was no problem going through the Bosnia corridor to get to Dubrovnik although there could have been as there was nowhere to get any insurance for my wife's bike (mine was already insured for Bosnia). When we came back to go to Mostar again there was no problem with the Bosnia corridor but when we entered Bosnia proper all our papers were checked so it was just as well my wife could buy insurance at that border (10 Euros for the week). After a night in Mostar with a very romantic meal at a terrace restaurant overlooking the floodlit bridge we continued north west back to Croatia on deserted roads though valleys and over hills. Wonderful ride.

Back in Croatia we spent a day at the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Just Google it for pics. Unlike UK National Parks you pay to get in and it is very organised with prepared footpaths with maps of different length suggested routes, restaurants, bars and electric boats over the lakes. The entrance fee covers using the boats and the views are wonderful. Definitely worth the trip.

Montenegro

If you're spending some days in Dubrovnik you're a spit away from Montenegro. Get down the road via Cavtat, Gruda and to the fjord at Kotor, get the ferry across and then drive along the lakeside road to Kotor, which is a mini version of Dubrovnik. A lot of charm and character. The hills/mountains around it are wonderful too. There's bear shit in them hills. Fantastic place. The border crossing was straightforward and I think cost 10-15 Euros for insurance.

See the thread is knocking on a little, but Ricardo's advice is spot on re: Montenegro. The scenery and riding is excellent. The road from Kotor to Cetinje is indeed a gem, but Garmin doesn't find it, trying to take you through some poor sods back garden. Worth hunting out and doing the detective work though for sure..
