Borrowed an 1150 GS for the w/e to try out from Vines. One owner. 2 years old. 18,000 miles. Not a mark on it. Graphite. Panniers. The bloke who owned it bought a 1200. Drives beautifully. Astonished at the balance in traffic (I'm new to GSs).

One question: there's a loud 'clatter' from the rear on take off. Is this a sign of wear or is it, "they all do that sir"?

Would appreciate a response as I have to give my answer on Monday.

Does that noise coincide with the red lights on the dashboard going out? If so, that's the ABS testing itself. Perfectly normal.

Buy it!! Norman

Thanks for the response but no, it does it from any stop in traffic, after it's got going and the ABS lights are out (i.e. arriving in Portsmouth after coming from Guildford it was doing it at each set of lights etc.) Ideas?

The ABS system does test itself regulalry while you are riding and it is usual to hear the noise about every 10 minutes if you are riding in stop start traffic.

Maybe I'm deaf, but I've never heard this on my ADv (evo II brakes).

pardon?

Mine doesn't do it, but if it's brake-related I couldn't say 'cos I don't have ABS. Maybe try another ABS-equipped bike (wouldn't have to be a GS, I'd guess the drive train is pretty similar for all the 1150s) and see you can reproduce it under the same conditions? If you can, there's your answer - buy it! :)

In between my last post and now I spoke to Duncan at Vines and he said it would be checked and, anyway, it'll have a year's warranty.

I think maybe Bob's got a point - it sounded like the same clatter as the ABS makes from start and maybe it wasn't every time...

And thanks for your encouragement. It looks like I'm convinced and you have another convert...

I have a 2001 pre Evo version and it runs an ABS self test every now and again when pulling away from a standstill.
Scared the crap out of me to start with but I think I am over it now....:D

mine does it in stop start traffic occasionally. it's the ABS.

Not conversant with GS's, but for what its worth all the shaft drive bikes I have driven have/ appear to have some slop in the rear 'diff' that can sometimes clunk if you dont get the revs right.

Although you mainly seem to get it when starting off, if the revs are totally out you can get it when changing gear.

My XJ900 (44k miles, has done it I got from when i got it about 10k miles ago, doesnt seem to bother it.

On my 02 ADV the ABS system tests itself everytime I move off from a complete stop. Admittedly I hear the noise more from the front disk than the back. The noise is a sort of chatter (roughly the sound of shuffling a deck of cards) that lasts roughly for 1 second. When it doesn't do this, the ABS has not kicked in.
