Hello all..
I'm just thinking out loud really .. but desperately need someone to tell me .. good .. or bad idea ..!!! :-)
As part of our trip .. we will be in the Bourg st Maurice area on sunday night .. and need to be in Misano on the Wedneday .. so in the 3 days im thinking from Bourg .. following the Route des Grandes Alpes.. but over the Bonnette .. down to the Menton area .. then across to Misano .. Its sounds good in my head .. and have looked at the maps ... :nenau
Does the plan work ..??? or am i wrong .. is too much..?? or sounds comfortable .. really need some help .. Thanks for reading my bable .. :-)
Clive :-)

...Sorry .. this trip will be in June ..

june you "should" be ok regarding snow but the weather has been terrible so maybe have a back up incase the bonnette is closed.

there is still snow on quite low hills

Hi, Why not go over the col d iseran to bonneval then to val cenis over mont cenis into susa , fantastic roads and mountain views. just a thought.

Well that was the original plan .. But we came up with an extra day .. So was wondering if doing the Bonette .. Then across to misano would be biting a bit more off than we can chew ... ??? We would like to see as much as we can .. But don't want to be over doing it..!!

Have you got a map and even a vague idea of how far you can go in day?

well yes .. and no ..!! hahahha..!! thats why im asking..!! well just checking really..!! its a bit hard trying to organise trips fot 7 or 8 bikes .. so want to try and get it right..!! less stress on the day and all that..!! we as a group normally plan between 3 and 4 hundred miles in a day .. but i know you struggle to do that in the alps .. espesially when there is a larger group..!! so i take it by the comments .. this is going to be an easy 3 days..??? just asking like..!!! :comfort

Menton to misano (thats near rimini ?) 360 miles , 5hours constant riding
Bourg to menton 300 miles following the Route Des Grand Alpes, 8 hrs 20 mins,
I'd say 3 days would be comfortable, 2 days a complete ball ache.

You will average 40mph or less in some of the Grande Alpes roads.

have fun, hope you like heights and narrow little twisty roads :thumb

Thankyou very very much .. cant wait to get down there .. :beerjug:

There has been realtively little snow down here this year, so I'd say the Bonette would definitely be open by June this year, probably even in May, should be easily do-able in three days, and it's a nice route too, though the only issue I'd have going over the Bonette then along to Misano is that the last leg will be along the autoroute from Nice to Genoa then onwards. Not a bad road, with hundreds of tunnels and bridges with views of the sea, but there may be more scenic routes. Forget the coast road along the French/Italian riviera, that would take you a week :D
You can check the status of any of the Cols using this link, gets updated regularly.

Clive Flatout ...

Oh my word! You appear to be quite a sensitive soul.

Bourg to Misano is well under 400 miles via the shortest route. Last year I did similar (in reverse) via the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard. It was an easy day's ride.

My reply should have indicated to you that this would not really be a challenge - even if your day's mileage is half what I would do. You could then thread in any extra loops that you want to take.

But I have to ask if you did any research yourself on this. Five minutes with Google maps would have told you most of what you wanted to know.

Frankly, just get on your bike on Monday morning and ride wherever you want. When you fell that time is getting tight, simply set your sat-nav for the quickest route to Misano and ride until you arrive.

dont know why your being defensive greg, the op has a point, if you read his post he did say he was following the route de grand alpes, thats not a days ride.
take it on the chin matey , try putting yourself in the ops shoes, how would you feel if someone responded to your post the way you did to his, who cares if he could have researched it himself, thats what the forums for.
:beerjug:
at least wapping has a fantastic sense of humour , I find his posts really funny.:hide

OK OK IM sorry .. But did feel pee'd off with your comments .. I have done loads of research, I have got the maps .. We have done several tours over the last few years so know how far we can go in a day..!! ive been to the Alps 3 times on my own .. So know it takes longer to get to places.. You can study a map for a year but you cant beat talking to someone who knows the area well. We're just after comfortable days .. We don't want to ride 12 hours a day..!! You can soon wreck a trip by taking too much on .. So that's why I pop'd the question .. (and wished I hadn't) I have always valued yours and wappings views and opinions..!! your knowledge is endless..!! i just didn't expect to be taken as a fool..!!! and as to my forum name .. flatout .. its more to do with my sleeping habits rather than anything to do with motorcycles . anyway .. i'll crawl back under me stone.. :-(
Clive.

A quick weather update from Grenoble. It's been snowing on and off in the mountains for the last week or so and, without checking any of the sites about the state of cols, I'm pretty certain that most of them on the northern end of the RGA (Iseran, Galibier, Izoard etc.) will be closed so you definitely need to consider alternative routes either in Italy or further west in the French Alps. THe route Napoleon is ok to ride.
