Doesnt seem to be returning very well, leaving the brake light illuminated for a time after braking - breaking itself is fine BTW.

Do the innards go often, or do you think a good clean out and lubing should do the trick.

I hear you can get replacement piston kits, are they a faff to fit? Or should I see what Steptoes got in one of his recycling bins?

I reckon it's just crud built up, despite it being enclosed, but you never know, will take a look tomorrow.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Are you sure it's the piston sticking? I've only stripped pistons out from non ABS bikes. Maybe pads out, toothbrush, brake cleaner spray.

Or is it the front brake lever sticking? It might just need greasing.

Are you talking about the front brake ??

if so, it's usually the pin the lever pivots on. They don't seem to clean up very well, and get a bit "ovaled" ( new word :D ) Get a new one, very low cost repair.

Or take a chance and clean it, see what happens. If it doeasn't work you'll then have to do it all again to replace the pivot pin :D

Yep, it's the front brake.

But the piston isnt returning out after being pushed in. I reckon it's gunk in there, that needs cleaning out, checked out the manual and it looks like P.O.P (famous last words). If it's an ovulated pivot pin, it would "snatch" I reckon :D

Same problem here. Couldn't bother with opening & cleaning so I placed a cable tie between the root of the brake lever and the outside of the hand protector.

An ovulated pin only sticks once a month . :D

It's not just the pin, there's some sort of plastic sleeve crap that gets scored and mangled on the surface. Plus loads of road crap gets in there as well .
Honest, i see a few a year and it's "USUALLY" the pin

on airheads you can just buy the nylon sleeve, maybe they are available for oilheads?

Buy a set of muffs :thumb

Not only do they protect the digits, but also the front brake pivot point :bounce1

Just popped out the cylinder, rubbers shagged and left a residue in the barrel, fooker was seized in, and front gasket worse. Ah well. New piston and rubbers should arrive next week.

Tell you what though, it's a dead simple design, I remember a similar thing happening on my kawasaki, it was all circlips and rubber shrouds pushed right into the barrel, I had to take to a bike shop to get it done properly.

Might be an idea to check your master cylinder piston though, despite being protected by the hand guards and a thick gaiter, there's a lot of crud in there.
