Brake disc choices

I've recently bought a second set of (wire spoked) wheels, and a brand new pair of EBC brake discs to put on them.

The EBC discs have a different drill pattern to the OE ones, in fact they have about half as many holes.

This got me wondering - should I fit the (new) discs with fewer holes to the off road wheels? I was originally planning to put the brand new discs on the road wheels. Or is it irrelevant and not worth worrying about? :D
 
Good luck with EBC discs. Mate of mine has a m/c repair business and he now refuses to have anything to do with EBC because of repeated warping problems.

5000-6000 miles seems to be the norm before distortion sets in and EBC are not willing to accept the blame (or the refunds) for their products.

Got to admit I've heard this from different sources as well Mouse :(

Reckon it would make more sense to fit them to the spoked wheels for two reasons:

1. Less severe use as used predominantly off road.
2. I believe the disc 'tolerances' are very critical when it comes to fitting them 'direct' to cast wheels as no disc carriers are uttalised and I would have greater trust in OEM discs than EBC.

hmm, thanks for the feedback. I went back to the shop that sold me the discs, and mentioned the concerns raised here. The chap in charge of their parts department (who has never given me bad advice) said they've not had any reports of problems with EBC discs, and if they had, they wouldn't sell them.

The clincher was that he said EBC wouldn't give them a refund on the discs unless they were faulty - which is fair enough - you can't expect a refund for a non faulty item just because you change you mind about it.

I'm confident that this bike shop will look after my interests if I do have a problem with these discs, so I'm going to go ahead and fit them to my spoked wheels, we'll see how they perform :)
 
It would be a good idea to swap pads each time you swap wheels aswell (they'll wear differently on the discs).
 
As long as I remember to label each pad so they always go back in the same place :D

Whenever I clean my brakes I've got a 50:50 chance of swapping the pads around (within each caliper) so I'm bound to have done that several times already. I wonder how much difference it would actually make, apart from requiring a few miles to bed the pads in properly.

What I normally do is give the friction surface a quick going over with a file, to hopefully remove any large irregularities.

Will be interested to see how they shape up - I'm waiting on a call from Pidcocks to take mine in for new discs as the OEM ones are warped!
