Remove car wheel remove speedo sensor. Find the other end of sensor wire unplug it. Plug in new sensor and fit sensor to FD casing with new O ring. Replace wheel. Job done.
I had this last month on my 2010 GS (brake warning ligh on and no speedo) it was the rear wheel sensor. Took it to local BMW garage and the sensor was changed in ha,f hour or so and working just fine since.
Same thing happened to me last weekend,In France at the moment. My 2007 GSA is heavily loaded, me (120kgs) the wife, the three boxes and a roll bag.
On a couple of occasions on the motorway (130kms +) the red brake warning light came on, no problems with the speedo, cycling the ignition seems to clear the fault and it is not happening keeping to lower speeds.
Puzzled.

Intermittent faults are unusual for solid state sensors. They generally work or don't work.
If you have speedo but no ABS, is it possible the problem lies with the front wheel sensor and/or its wiring?I had my wheel and brake caliper off last night and took out the speedo sensor. The oil was delightfully clean (thanks Mikeyboy) so put it all back together. I also ran a small screwdriver along the cable connector contact pins. Today the speedo and ABS are as happy as. Everything looked clean so who knows what's going on.
