Remove car wheel remove speedo sensor. Find the other end of sensor wire unplug it. Plug in new sensor and fit sensor to FD casing with new O ring. Replace wheel. Job done.
BRAKE FAILURE AND NO SPEEDO!

Leave the car wheel where it was but make sure you use a new O ring. Only £1.

I had this last month on my 2010 GS (brake warning ligh on and no speedo) it was the rear wheel sensor. Took it to local BMW garage and the sensor was changed in ha,f hour or so and working just fine since.

That was the good thing for me it cost nowt as it was done under warranty! I dread to think how much it would be if the cost of a service is anything to go by!

Had the same problem, see Speedo (not Daniel Craig's) on here. Bike went into the local Motorrad dealer for a checkup and found an intermittent fault in rear sensor. Suggested as it was intermittent I would have the bike back as it is or, they would replace it for £106 inc VAT. So decided to replace it for peace of mind .... it's only money ! Just thankful it wasn't more serious !!

Intermittent faults are unusual for solid state sensors. They generally work or don't work. It could be the wire from the sensor or the connector up by the rear shock top mounting.
Mine has started the same malarkey so I probably need a new sensor. But this morning I have a speedo but no ABS. Maybe codes need to be cleared. First job will be petrol tank off and see if there are any chafed wires. I've had that before so apart from my time it's a no cost check.

In France at the moment. My 2007 GSA is heavily loaded, me (120kgs) the wife, the three boxes and a roll bag.
On a couple of occasions on the motorway (130kms +) the red brake warning light came on, no problems with the speedo, cycling the ignition seems to clear the fault and it is not happening keeping to lower speeds.
Puzzled.

Same thing happened to me last weekend,
but my speedo didn't work for the first ten minutes on start up
Only cleared after I'd left the bike over night.
On the return journey I didn't go above 80 mph and everything stayed as it should

I had my wheel and brake caliper off last night and took out the speedo sensor. The oil was delightfully clean (thanks Mikeyboy 
) so put it all back together. I also ran a small screwdriver along the cable connector contact pins. Today the speedo and ABS are as happy as. Everything looked clean so who knows what's going on.

I'm hoping I've just knocked the speed sensor, putting a cable lock through the wheel/hub.

Not that unusual. I've had wheel speed sensors fail on two of my cars over the years and in both cases the initial failure only manifested itself intermittently. Over time (months) they both made the transition to permanent failure (internal windings shorted).

AFAIK, the brake failure warning has not appeared while speedo is working. I've had it all seem fine until speedo stops and brake failure warning light comes up. Brake light wont go off until bike is restarted. Later I've had the bike start and brake failure warning stays up. A few minutes later the speedo picked up but brake warning wont go away until bike is restarted.
I'm back home. Stripped all the weight (wife + luggage) off the bike and went for a blast......160kmh+ (in my dreams officer) and all seems well, no brake warning lights.
Is there any scenario where excessive weight on a tired rear shock could cause the fault??

I'm pretty sure the speedo will indeed start working again as soon as the signal resumes. The ABS will only restart (quite sensibly) when the full set of self-checks have been passed - checks which only take place at switch-on.

When I had this issue the speedo always started to work after a few miles while brake failure continued to flash. I assumed the system started using the signals from the front sensor, rather than the rear magically coming back on line. Replacing the rear sensor made everything normal again.
My friend had this on his RT last year. There was a fault with rear bearing that had damaged a seal. Oil was in the abs sensor.

The rear ABS sensor is the speedo sensor. It sits through a hole in the final drive casing behind the rear brake disc. So it always runs in oil. Mine is clean but metal filings stuck to the sensor will indicate mechanical problems with the final drive gears and bearings.
