Brake Failure light has come on!

I got on my 09 1200 SE yesterday morning nothing abnormal. I set off and the brake failure light failed to go out! I pulled over and stopped, switched off and re started, still on!!

Rode to work with the light on, brakes felt funny, i now realise that the combined system stops and reverts to standard braking. Rode home in evening same issue except i stopped and it reset itself, so all fine except i could feel that abs flutter on occasion on the way.

Same again this morning, no abs!

I have booked it in for a service next week anyway for its 24k mile service.

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas?

I had heard that if the battery is suspect it could stop the ABS from kicking in.

It's usually because the brake level is touching the hand guard on startup.

The bike interprets that as a failure.....

Is the brake light permanently on?
If so, suspect either a trapped front brake lever or the rear brake switch is engaged, somehow.

Mine has a sticky switch on the front brake lever that sometimes causes this problem.

Thers switches are NO (normally on) and switch off when the brake is applied.

Very similar but I also had the brake failure light stay on last week. After numerous attempts of stopping and starting to try and clear it, I finally saw my rear brake light permenantly stuck on. After messing around with a few things I discovered that my front brake lever had stuck in position.

After relaxing the tension on the lever followed by a couple of direct squirts with WD40 problem solved

I've been awake all night fretting about this.

I just can't stand this kind of tension ............

No not sorted! Sorry if you were all worrying about it!

Checked to see brake light was permanently on, it isn't.

Checked to see if hand guard was fouling the lever, it does not appear to be, no spurious crud in the rear brake lever either.

Stumped! Will have a proper look on Saturday as it is now dark when I leave in the morning and get home at night, no sympathy or micky taking required.

Just to finish this thread off, it was a faulty speed sensor on the front wheel that caused the brake failure light to come on!

No signal was coming from it, being replaced under warranty as we speak by those nice chaps at NOG!

Scrap that last update, it appears it was not a faulty speed sensor, due to time constraints it has been booked in again to have some more extensive jiggery pokery on the electrics! The witch doctor has been drafted in!

Needed a new wiring loom in the end, there was a break in the connection somewhere so they ended up changing the loom, as it was easier than tracing the broken wire.

Either that or they took the bulb out of the brake failure light!!

Anyway problem solved no more irritating light and hopefully my ABS has returned.

Just a point to note;
Switches are referred to being NO or NC, normally open and normally closed.

If it were normally 'on' then what would a normally 'off' switch be' ? NO!

Brake failure lights on

Hi all,
Could someone assist what could be wrong with my 2010 GSA? After the engine started, the Brake failure light keep flashing. I thought it would go away by engaging into gear but it refuses to get into 1st gear. The N light would turn off temporary whenever i try to get push into the 1st gear but N will turn on again. I could not even hear any attempt on the gearbox to get it into 1 gear.

anyone can share what could be the problem?

The ABS light will not go off until the bike has moved and attained a few mph so that the diagnostics can check the system. It's in the Owners Handbook.

Don't know why it won't go into 1st; have you tried slight pressure on the gear lever while gently letting out the clutch?

Thank you for your input... The brake Failure light did goes off after the bike moved but it came back after engine was restarted. Again it goes off after it moved. Could it be sensor problem?

As for 1st gear, i usually clutch-in the lever until it almost reach the handle grip; hence it couldn't engage 1st gear. I have to ease off the clutch lever about 2 cm away from the grip before i can get it into 1st gear. Sorry for such a noob question on this as i just got delivery of my 2010 GSA.

It's all perfectly normal: The brake failure flashes every time you start the bike until it reaches 4mph/6kmh or something like that.


...and my bike is 6+ years old and 1st gear is still like that.

Nothing to worry about.
