Brake Failure nightmares !!

Place in germany does recon units. He takes all the old servo units i've removed from bikes.

He supplies a few bmw main dealers in the uk.:augie

FINALLY !

I checked out the clip on youtube on how to fix the ABS module and finally completed it tonight and the bike seems ok.

Just a few observations.....

The guy on youtube uses chemical metal. I did the first time but the black cover where the contacts are, worked loose on a test ride and the fault light returned.

I used araldite this time and backed it up with a couple of cable ties to hold it all together while it goes off. Time will tell if this method is strong enough. Without the lugs there to hold the unit together it will always be weak.

Took it for a test drive and everything i back to normal again.

Total cost about £20.
The feeling of relief that i didn't pay the £1300 that my local dealer wanted? F**King priceless !:clap

Well done cookhouse! I put the link up hoping you would be able to repair the unit as the guy on the video did so well done to you and what a saving on the old pounds!!!!!!!!!:D I hope the adhesive fix works out for you if not remember that it is crucial that all oil or grease is removed from the unit before fixing anyway a really good end to the saga!

Well done :thumb2

I've used Chemical Metal before and found it was never very strong. Perhaps I had a bad tube. Epoxy putty is better for filling holes in things, Araldite for sticking them together.

Quick question for you: Were you able to remove the motor from the hydraulic unit without taking it off the bike (and disconnecting the brake system lines)?

MMM... i don't think that it could be done like that. To be honest i don't think that you'd have the room to be able to get the cover off, I also wanted to be careful not to completely break off the lugs that hold it together/stop you from carrying out a simple repair!
I used a 20mm wood chisel to carefully prise it off and that seemed to work ok i also put plenty of rag under the unit to catch the fluid that will leak out when you take the break lines.
All in all it was easier than i thought it would be.

Thanks to all that have posted all the helpful advice.:comfort

Well I am very pleased to say that my "brake failure" light went out of its own accord, the only thing I did was to clean the rear lamp contacts (not sure if this is the reason). Fingers crossed it stays that way

:beerjug:

Electronics grade silicone sealer is the best stuff for sticking down covers. It doesnt give off acetic acid fumes so the electrics wont tarnish. Its also easier to cut through if the cover has to come off again.

I'm not so sure one-pack is "ideal for potting" but as a non corrosive sealant/adhesive, this is the stuff

ABS Brake Failure Light ON

The Story so far.......

Still got the Brake Failure light on :tears

Anyway i paid a visit to my BMW Dealer and put it onto their diagnostic machine and it came up that there was no power to the ABS Pump. They took the tank off and checked the connections and still no joy, so, new ABS Pump. The quote is £1230. F**K!

Motorworks can supply me a secondhand one for a fraction of that cost so i'm tempted to fit it myself.

My question is has anyone on here fitted one before themselves, as i'm keen to get any info on this before i break out the spanners and get Tourettes syndrome!

The dealer did say that the pump has to be bled electronically, ie on a diagnostic machine. Anyone heard of this before?

Regards

Baz

I write in sympathy Baz...just had my R1200GSA (06) serviced by a main dealer and they wouldn't put an MOT on it coz the Brake Failure Light was on permanently, 'needs a new ABS unit mate' they said, 'how much?' said I...'bout a grand' they said...I didn't ask if that included VAT! So after nearly fainting and wishing I'd never brought the bike and threatening to send a picture from a previous tour to MCN of my bike on a recovery truck in Malaga after an alternator failure...they still said, 'can't do nuffin mate, it's out of warranty and you missed a service'....
If people would read these blogs I'm sure BM sales would drop...nice looking bike though!
Hope you get yours sorted, PM me if you don't mind with rectification!
Cheers:confused:
