Riding to work yesterday and pulled the brake lever in to turn into work and no servo, red brake light flashing.

Thank god it did not do it a few mins before filtering but had it in at the dealers today and that diagnostic machine noted it was the brake switch.

Are they common to go wrong or is it just bad luck for me again and is there anything I can do to stop it happening again?

Cheers

When I had something similar happen on my R1100S - I was told that an actual fault is not that common, but something jamming the switch causing a fault condition the next time you start the bike is - mine was fixed by freeing up the jammed contact spring and the dealer helped me sort the problem down the phone.

BTW I know what jammed mine - I clipped a traffic cone filtering near road works :hide

Check that the RH hand guard isn't making contact with the front brake lever. If the front brake lever is applied slightly when the ignition is swithced on and the bike does its checks you will get a brake failure.

So what your saying is that there was no brake failure at all and that I should have looked at the hand guards and they have conned BMW out of a new brake switch since I was on warranty?

No I'm not saying there wasn't a brake failure. If they've changed the switch then I guess you'll never know. At least you know where to start looking next time... Have had this on my '06 bike due to a droopy handguard. Also seen it on another 1200 after was dropped on its RHS.
