So my brake light on my 1150gs doesnt work from either front or rear brake the rear light still works. The other symptoms are when i turn the bike on there are no dash lights (neutral). When it fires up and i rev it the battery light and neutral comes on but when i rev it the neutral light goes dimmer. If i ride the bike the battery light shows up really dim and brake lights dont work during any stage. The bike has been running fine until i dropped it yesterday (walking pace on the drive) :augie .Any ideas anyone what may be the cause. I have checked the fuses, changed the bulb the battery seems to be fine on the voltmeter and i cant see any broken wires.

Sounds like you might have a corroded earth Mark.

If you remove the tank then look at the offside of the headstock you will see the wiring loom run up along there.

Carefully cut the sheath covering the loom and start to gently separate the wires. If you see a copper-green gel type mess then you have most likely found the problem.

Make good all the joints then check your lights etc before re-wrapping the loom again.

Credit for this knowledge goes to Steptoe who recommended this to me many years ago and I haven't had any further issues since.

See about one bike every six weeks with the mouldy earth problem :D

Okay Aidan is likely spot on with the Main Dash panel Earth links They run along the spine from the head stock to under the dash panel
when an earth link fractures due to the corrosion the component bulb tries to earth out through the next circuit so you can get dim bulbs or Bulbs that should not even be illuminated may appear on

If you don't have a battery light be careful as your alternator may not be charging!! The alternator needs a wee bit of voltage to get it working Then it "negates" the earth for that bulb as its starts charging ( <- oversimplified but about right)

The brown "earth" wires are all crimped in together, Aidan's was an unusual case in that it started and ran fine but as soon as you selected gear it cut out if I recall correctly We'd just done a clutch change prior to it and were a tad flummoxed as to why that would appear

The brake lamp issue, What year/cc of GS

Did you change the bulb??

the Brakes are fed 12v positive from the ignition circuit and the switches on Non Servo make the bridge to complete the circuit

So if its not servo ABS you can try just simply testing the switch connections at the point where they click into the loom

You should see one 12V positive and One ground IF you have no 12V positive its likely a broken wire But its really easy to loop in a feed through a fuse if you need to

Front and rear brake lights not working could just be the rear bulb stop light element blown.
