ok..
heres the story
out last week for a spin and mm.ie notices my brake light isnt working,,
arse..
check the lightunit when i get home to find that the bulb has melted a bit into the reflector unit and refuses to come out..
so a few days later i remove bulb with the help of a plyers and a few choice words..
i then file the surround to allow fitment of new bulb..
(im waiting a few days for replacement reflector)
- aside.. bmw do not supply reflector on its own,, whole taillight section has to be ordered,, reflector and mount plus red bit,, all for the cost of 34 euros plus vat, theres even a bulb in there.. so its not that bad)
anyways back to the story..
get the rear light fitted with a new bulb to find the damn thing is still arsed.. the brake light now stays on..
stand back , have a smoke, and scratch me head..
ah the sensor in the handlebar thingy maybe?.
so messing with brake find that it is a sticky sensor.. it wont switch off unless i fiddle with it a bit..
call a bmw mechanic friend who says just to clean it with wd40..
try spraying into the area but its still arsed, so i decide to take the thing apart..
ok another smoke while i get meself organised..
so i take the handlebar cover off, (underneath) to get to sensor.. 3 screws on botom panel.. is all you need to remove i think, but i of course took the whole damn thing apart, bar the brake fluid resavoir
next: unscrew the sensor from the handlebar.. its set in so the brake lever compresses the sensor arm when its used.. nice n simple, no tricky fitting once your carefull..
so now i can get at it properly.. its a bit fiddely by the way.. but not to difficult.. dont cut the wires, the sensor will hang down under the handlebar and let you clean away..
anyhows copious ammounts of wd40,, some blowing and some tissue to clean the little bugger, yes tis a bit gritty, and remember to clean the area surrounding unit itself..
some testing to make sure it works properly..
and success, its fine..
now to put the thing back together..
10 mins later its all ok,, and my brake light works properly..
so if anyone has such a problem,, tis no hassle to fix..
one thing needed is a v small flat head screwdriver, a phase tester (small) should do it.. to remove the senor unit istelf..
regards
pthagonal..ps fitted new rear light but yesterday as well.. so its all nicely working now..
