Pottering in my garage, walked past the GS and gave the front brake a friendly squeeze, right back to the bar accompanied by a slight hissing noise, inspection revealed the line that runs between the master cylinder and the ABS unit had failed, It was leaking from near the end under the fuel tank, a fine spray of brake fluid coating everything near it, thank goodness I wasnt riding at the time, no warning, I had my new set of Melvins stainless lines so easily fitted the first one then bled the system backwards from the ABS unit using a srynge, lever feels better than before, I think I will tear the forks apart this week and replace the rest of them, in my previous incarnation as a vehicle technician I have replaced many many brake flexis but have never seen one fail like this, I have seen them stretched, rotted and rubbed near through but never leaking.

Sorry, must edit profile, 1998 1100 GS, the line was not tight on full lock or anything like that and where its failed there is no possibility of chafing on anything, just a catastrophic failure, I was riding the bike on the weekend and everything was fine, fluid level in master cylinder okay, strange indeed. I will replace the rest of the lines tomorrow.

Steptoe warned us about this a few months ago that he was finding brake lines failing on the 1100 gs, can't seem to find the thread though.
