Aren't these things always a feature/characteristic not faults!

I believe, it is the linked system that is at fault. It appears to be the bias that is wrong. At very low speed or pushing the bike around, the back brake comes on first when applying the front.

How do you ascertain that the back brake comes on first at low speed or pushing it around. If BMW set it up to do this we`d all end up in the nearest hedge whenever we tried to brake for a corner

I thought I had noticed when manoeuvring at low speed in town the rear brake working before the front (when using the front brake lever only). I've taken the rear pads out twice now for a quick look because of the reported high wear rate and despite this they have loads of life in them at 4700 miles.

I tend to cover and use the rear brake perhaps more than most as I'm still using old school brit bikes that require the application of both brakes to stop in a reasonable and controlled fashion

New rear pads fitted under warranty on mine today @3750 miles
Outboard pad was around 2.8-2.9 mm, Inboard 1.7-2.4 mm

Not at low speed you wouldn't. But the bias shifts to front as speed increases.

Sorry, what I meant was that I don't use the back brake independently. As you say, applying the front brakes brings the back brake into play as well (dependent upon conditions).

I use the back brake independently a lot. But then I do a lot of low speed manouvering in London. Rear pads seem to last forever. But the mine's a hexhead.

Seems to that there is a bad batch of rear pads / rear discs out there or perhaps the low speed bias towards the rear is a bit too strong. I guess the bias changes with speed.

Rear pads still wearing down pretty quick, mine were changed at 2700 miles back in July under warranty, just had the 6k service done at about 6600 miles i.e. 3900 miles since new pads and had a call do I want them changed as 50% worn so unlikely to make it to next service I will buy some ebc and replace myself when needed. I am sure on my old GS the rears lasted at least 15k and the fronts around 30k. Keep an eye on your rears

Mine are still good at 8000 miles ive got a set of EBC ready to go in but the originals are at about 50% worn now. It must be down to riding styles especially as they are linked brakes.
