Brake pipe/ ABS module union

For what it is worth here is my tale concerning my brake pipe replacement on my 07 1200GS
Went to my local BMW dealer today to discuss another matter and got on to the rumour that BMW may be changing brake pipes connected to the ABS module on 07 GS`s. The conversation went some thing like this.

Me. “Are they changing brake pipes on 07 GS`s”

Technician. “Depends on which type of brake system you have” (Apparently there are two types of Integral Brake Systems) “ Give me your Chassis Number. I will put it into the computer and see what comes up”

Off he went and came back with the info that my bike needed the pipes changed and a ECU mapping upgrade.

Me. “Why have I not had a Recall Letter about my brake pipes from BMW?”

Technician. “You won`t. BM are relying on effecting the changes on those bikes identified by chassis number when customers bring them in for service.”

Moral of this story must be to go to your dealer armed with your Chassis number and ask them to see if you need to have brake pipes replaced on recent bikes. My GS will go for its 6000 service in June and have the new brake pipes fitted then. The technician did add that he had never heard of any problems and BM were just being cautious.

Hmm looks like some dealers are more efficient than others as my brother got an unprompted phone call from his dealer saying that the hoses needed changing on his bike even though he didn't have any services arranged.

Think his dealer was South London Motorcycles in Caterham

what - they chhad to put in new fluid as a result of a safety recall and you paid for it - didn't you let them charge you labour as well?

In Germany riders did get a recall notice. But obviously not all. Which resulted in at least one instance of total brake failure (front brake) of a R1200GS owner. The story in German language is here. This owner and at least anonther one got then a recall notice. BMW claims that this has been the second recall notice..., I guess for liability-reasons.

I don't get it. Personally I do believe that a total brake failure of the front brake does cleary create an emergency situation. And I truely believe that every owner should get a recall notice.

I don't know if this is connected, but my feb 08 1200 went in for its 6000 mile service today. All went well with the routine stuff. I was packing up to leave when I saw the tell tale shimmer of an oil leak on the wet ground under the bike. Had a good look and I could see oil coming down from under the tank. Thought the only way oil could be up there would be from the air box and crank breather. Back to the workshop, tank off and blow me, every time the front brake lever was squeezed, a thimble full of brake fluid came from the front brake union on the ally block distributor thingy!
All the unions were tight but it would appear that either the brake pipe (bundy tubing) was split, or the upset ferule was split. Either way, front brake failure would have preceded any 'low level' warnings!
Of course, none in stock but a spare was found

I think I have had a bit of an escape - better have a glass or two of vino tinto to settle my nerves!!!

Rang my dealer (Jeffries) after seeing the possiblity of the brake pipe recall on this site. They then confirmed that my 07GS was due, I booked it in and the job was done. The letter arrived the day after the phone call.
A few weeks later at the 6000ml service they mentioned they would also fix the mapping upgrade, but also added that they would need to change the brake fluid.!!
"Hang on it was in for a recall, did you not change it then. Yes but BM say the fluid must be changed after 6000 mls then after 2 years.!!"
"2 years I will have, but the expense of having it done after 6000mls, what are BMW playing at?.
Or more to the point what cheap brake fluid are they putting in the machines from new?
