Just had all the calipers refurbished after the 2006 1200 gsa had been standing outside for 3 months whilst the insurance company quibbled about whether to write her off or not , now all sorted and have bought her back as cat D and after getting everything checked she is now going back on the road.

she will be a slow rebuild over the next few months as there are few things that need sorting , crash bars need repainting as do the cylinder head covers and one of the fork seals has blown so replacing those as well. might even get the rear sub frame powder coated and sort out all those irritating corrosion spots

The old girl owes me nothing after the insurance payout so she is going to get some time spent on her .

whilst she stood the rear caliper pistons seized and despite numerous attempts would not budge , decided to get them aall refurbished and repainted in Brembo red ( look really good) . The missus is happier as well as very nervous about letting me out to ply again

Now starting to put it all back together and have lost the r pins that go through the pad retaining pins on both the rear and front calipers

Does anyone know what size r pins should be used as I cannot find it written down anywhere.

thanks in anticipation

I cant help with the R pin but its an unusual shape so probably a main dealer item. Ask nicely when you get some other dealer only stuff and they'll throw one in FOC. You can get a normal brake R pins via eBay or Wemoto.

Was the fork seal leaking before the crash? The forks might be bent so get them checked before spending on seals.

The crash bars are stainless so should clean up nicely. They are a pain to straighten though. The bolts rust but don't fit stainless replacements. The threads will, gall/seize. Fit normal zinc plated and change them when the zinc fails.

If the back sub-frame is showing corrosion also check the steering strut and beak/screen subframe. File off any sharp/rough edges so the coating wont go too thin on the edge. While its apart the access will be easier to clean out the starter motor.

I use CJ Ward in Burton on Trent for my powder coat and stove enamel jobs. Chris does a lot of stuff for bikes so know his stuff. They are a trek from Cheshire but you could take everything in job lot. Alloy bike wheels are £25 each but BMW wheels (and most painted alloy parts) need to be chemical stripped. Adds another £15 plus hassle.

thanks for help

have replaced both the fork tube as one had a small crease in it , replaced the other as precaution , fortunately frame ok , will give ward a ring in new year as not too far from occasional travels

My '06 1200GS could really do with the calipers tidying. Did you get someone local to do it or did you do it yourself? If so what's involved? I assume like mine, yours is an ABS/Servo model.

hi

mine is the non abs version , I used Powerhouse in Sheffield , they sorted one of my daughters bikes last year and service was great. www.powerhouseautomotive.co.uk

I took the calipers off myself which was not difficult , make sure you keep any pin and spring , the rest was a simple task of bagging them up and sending them off , Dave at powerhouse was really helpful so give him a call . the calipers were blasted clean and repainted and baked after a full check over and look great . rear caliper going on later and fronts tomorrow

I had the full rebuild and refurb and they replaced all the seals , nipples, rubbers etc , was £238 incl p&p and they used brembo seals . took about 10 days in total. the calipers were in a sorry state having being stood for a while and whilst I could have struggled to get them done myself I wanted the confidence of having them properly sorted and after 36k they were getting tired . It has also made me do a full brake service which I have no record of being done recently.
