I know this has been discussed before but could someone talk me through the procedure for removing the servo/abs from my 2003 R850R. I am a HGV Mechanic so I am familiar with braking systems. After I have undone all the pipes and fitted new Goodrich hoses. What needs to be done with the electrics, i.e. censors, warning lights, brake light switches, or anything else.

I don't think it's ever been discussed for a 2003 r850r. Do they have servo brakes or just abs? I've a '99 model and it has abs only.

Why are you taking out the abs? You could just switch the abs off when you first get on the bike. Give you the ' no abs ' experience.

To answer your question, I removed the servo from my 1150. It was a learning curve but I wouldn't have done it if I thought I had another option. A dodgy servo and a dodgy abs unit are different things. Nice first post btw:rob

brakes

Thanks for the quick reply. The info is excellent, I will proceed with the removal of Servo & ABS. I've only had this bike for 3 months, I've done 5.000. miles. returned yesterday from a trip. France, Germany, Austria, Italy Slovenia and back, 3.117 miles. nearly came off a few times stopping at the payage and junctions as the front brake is too powerfull at low speeds. and the back is on or off, no feel to it.
and I hate ABS. I like to be in control of my brakes not some electronic censor.

Abs

This sounds like a rider problem how can the abs cause the wheel to lock up?
which is hop it reads. I would suggest a bit of a more delecate touch with the front brake and it would seem you are underestimating your speed approaching a stop, abs would not let the wheel lock up and you normally have to brake very hard to make it operate.

I've had this on about 5 Servo ABS bikes It's almost worse than residual braking

You ride along at 20 mph and you "touch" the brakes and all of a sudden you have a smoking front wheel as the servo maximises braking power @ FULL and ignores the ABS routine completely!

Hi Colin - it was good to see you again. Glad to see you are making good use of the forum.
I think you have ridden your Harley too much and got used to the so called brakes fitted to them!
Sounds like you have a problem with the back brake though-might be an idea to check the pads-are they old or glazed?
As for the ABS I find it very rarely intrudes but then I find it more fun to use the throttle than the brakes anyway. Good luck with the removal though and I hope we see you out here again soon.

hello John. yes you are right I am used to Harley brakes. But what you forget living in Austria is we have a lot more traffic here in the uk and you have to use the brakes a lot. my rear pads are old and glazed and I will replace them soon, but I renewed the fronts before I came over to see you,
I used EBC Sintered.

It's when a wheel locks that the abs censor triggers the abs unit to let the brake off, That's why you get that knocking through the brake pedal, it's letting the brakes on and off.

The post 2001 850 models are the same as the 1150 models, apart from having 850cc .

followed the instructions and removed the servo/abs. everything went acording to plan. hardest part was removing the servo warning sticker from the petrol tank. anybody want a servo/abs unit going cheap.
thanks again for the info Neil.
