I've just had a 6000 mile service at Bahnstomer (£100 all in). They have advised that I have 0.2mm wear left on front disc and have quoted me £280 to replace it. This seems a bit steep but the OEM disc seems to be around £180 so I can see how they come to the total. However, I need a cheaper alternative, can any one recommend an supplier/shop including engineering companies who will make a pattern one and any tips on changing it myself?

Also, the front tyre (Bridgestone) has only 2mm of tread before illegal. Back tyre has plenty left, I do not want to change them both but nor do I want to stick to the existing make (6000 miles on a front tyre is poor). I've ridden many bikes/cars previously with mixed makes with no ill effect -I ride solely on the road. Has anyone else tried it on this bike and if so what combination - I'm considering the Continental?

You only got 6k out of the disc? That's not right.

For higher mileage you could try Tourances - I have 12k plus on mine (on a Transalp) and they still have a few k left.

Cheers

Rich

PFM discs are great quality at lower than OEM prices, probably will last longer too.

I have mixed tyres, it is not illegal (I believe) but is never recommended so insurance companies may whinge if you have an accident, same goes with non recomended fitments, but if tyre is correct size / rating I do not think they can refuse a payout - but they may try it on!

Hello and welcome with your first Post :beerjug:

plenty of options with the disc motor works etc and yes it is to expensive, But why is it so worn with so few miles?

As for the tires lotts of options down to personal preference realy. (mine are tourance at the Moment but next ones will be more road biased on my alloys and TKC's on my wires :D ) the tire section is a good place to look, maybe if you was to subscribe you can search specific also it will save you more than the £12.

Hi Artful ...

I can only concur with the worries about the extent of wear on the disc after so few miles - something's not right ... Did they say anything about the pads and how many sets have you replaced? Have you had the bike from new?

Regarding the tyre - I don't think there's a huge amount of tread (depth) on these fronts from new - my 'Wings were the first ever set of tyres I had that wore to the limit at the same time, usually I'm on 2 rears to one front - mine were both out of business at about 8k. Have you had a brake binding problem I wonder?

G

ps - Wimborne's only 25 mins from Winchester .. You have no excuse not to come and see Mr. Vince on the 9th November!

front discs and the front tyre wearing quickly [well relatively]l i would have to say that you are a little heavy on the front brake, maybe adjust riding style a bit .:)
do you use the front brake exclusively ?

I've only owned the bike for 2 months (only done one trip to France = 1000 miles), previous owner was a city gent, I don't know what he did with it.

As for using too much front brake, I'm the opposite, too much back brake according to others but I'd rather slide the back and stay on than slide the front and fall off!

I don't have confidence in the front tyre, especially on the lanes I commute on with lots of patches of loose gravel/wash on the corners, with little option but to go through it as the lanes are so narrow. I was given a loan 1200gs to ride with new Continentals on it felt much more secure - obviously the weight was a factor. I've now discovered that a new tyre only comes with 5mm of tread so mine with 2.6 mm are only half worn!

Thanks for tips on the brake discs. They never said anything about binding at service but I might have a look myself. Fuel economy is 60-70mpg so I would guess that the binding is not the issue, probably the previous owner as I try hard not to waste energy braking by anticipation - luckily not too many traffic jams in the lanes over the South Downs!

A further question, would bits for the F800GS fit the F650GS - a lot of the websites don't list the F650 2008 onwards as an option but they do list F800GS.

How much tread is it one a pair of new Bridgestone Battlewings? 5mm front? Back tire?

Sorry I can't find the detail on the rear but front is 5mm.

Brakes - I've found an engineering company with a front disc for the 2007 F650gs at just £60 (1/3rd of BMW price!) - would this fit on the 2008. Sadly I can't find the technical spec on either aside from 300mm diameter on 2008. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
