I have an ABS 1200GS. It's the first ABS bike I have owned, so I am not sure if this behaviour is expected or not. I have had the following experience twice.

When braking hard, for the first fraction of a second there seems to be no braking. If anything the bike seems to accelerate forward, but I am pretty sure this is my imagination. Then the brakes kick in and slow down as usual.

The first time this happened I was riding on a very bumpy bit of road surface and I wondered if perhaps the ABS had been fooled into activating. The second time, the road surface was fine.

I don't think I have the surging problem some people have described. As my previous two bikes (Hornet and GSX-R600) were quite "twitchy" I was worried I might just be riding around the problem, but a friend has a 1200 with the problem and says there's no way I wouldn't have noticed as it's a major issue.

It's a little disconcerting, but the bike does still stop OK, albeit not as quickly as usual. Have others had this experience? Is it cause for concern, or is it just a characteristic of the ABS?

I've also posted this on the 1200 board - hope cross-posting doesn't offend!

thanks in advance for any opinions.

Yeah - the ABS WILL activate quite easily on a bumpy road and give you that 'Oohh Sh!t' moment. Keep a good grip on the lever and the thing will then stop in double-quick time, though.
