Brand New 07 GSA Engine Rattling

Gday all,

Top site and a hive of collective wisdom it seems. I hope someone can help me work out what is going on with my 07 GSA (Sept build) with only 3000 klm's on the clock.
Riding between 3500-4000 RPM and above the engine rattles/knocks very loudly.
This is my second GSA as I wrote one off on a trip riding over the Top Of Australia last year:tears I did over 30,000 klm's all up on her without any noises like this bike emits.
I'm using 98 octane and the rattle has nothing to do with pinging which I'm familiar with.
Put it this way, my Norton commando rattled and knocked like this GSA dose before the mains went west with the rotor taking out the stator.

Question is do I have a out of spec motor? It sounds like loose gudgeon's and piston slap. Of course I'll have the dealer look at it (again) but the head BMW mech has already test ridden it and I could tell he was reserving his comment.

This bike also has a buckled rim from factory which is being replaced under warranty and was way out of spec so much so that it wore a brand new Metz Karoo out in only 2500 klm's.
To top it off the bike had two missing bolts (Rear Rack and one Crash Bar) and all 4 lower triple clamp bolts were just off hand tight (noticed when backing bike out of the shed and the fork tubes were binding/twisting in the clamps. I've since gone over the whole bike with a torque wrench using my Haynes Workshop manual Torque specs. Found several other loose bolts as well.

What do you blokes reckon? Anyone heard of any other engines leaving the factory out of spec like mine is? It seems this bike has definitely been slapped together. I have read of blokes with similar bad engines but never heard of any outcomes.
I raced a GSX-R-600 for 3 years in the State Champs and Blue printed the engine myself and have rebuilt everything from a Chev 350/ Jaguar V12 to the mighty Norton but I'm finding it hard to come to grips with a brand new bike sounding prematurely worn out like this and being such an expensive bike like the BMW, I was under the impression quality control would be above average.

I'm genuinely concerned the bike might buck me of if something lets go in there. I have taken some sound recordings which clearly indicate something ain't right. Valves set spot on and head torqued to factory spec so I've eliminated every possible cause of this rattle or have I?
I love the GSA's obviously as I got another after the first one failed to bounce and hope BMW do the righty and replace the engine as whole rather than fitting a new piston or what ever.

Thanks in advance

Here's a pic of what happens when a big heavy pig like the GSA bucks too hard.

Actually while sailing thru the air and being an ex road racer (had worse crashes) soiling the duds was the last thing I'd do:cool:
In fact it would be rather enjoyable if it was not for the fact you get hurt and it cost money after the inevitable thud happens.
Money can't buy the kind of drug that the human body produces when the unexpected happens but seriously tho:D I hit a dust bowl with a concealed ledge on the exit (gazzetted outback Australian road)and to this day i don't know if the swingarm broke causing the bike to highside me or what?

My main concern tho now is this new bike and getting it sorted so i can continue where the last bike stopped. I'll post a few more pics of the wreak later. Crying shame because that #1 bike was a goodun damn it:(

Yikes :eek Thanks for that Chief. Good to see a web site devoted to all aspects of BMW ownership good and bad but at the end of the day as long as BMW do the righty allsgood.

After reading some of the engine failures here I should mention also that the motor makes a loud intermittent tick, tick racket while under load at around 4500 rpm in any gear as well (not pre detonation).
I put it down to the cam chain whipping due to a tight spot in it perhaps? It may also be a valve very slightly hitting the piston top due to said timing chain flex?

I use only the best lubricants money can buy. The new GSA has a oil level warning that comes with the OBC and it checks ok every time (used secondary to the site glass of course) but the bike has been using oil excessively compared to my old bike anyway which never burnt a drop of oil in the 30,000 klm's I did on her.
I put in 500 ml in the first 3000 klm's.
When i picked the bike up and the salesman started it the bike puffed out a plume of blue smoke which then quickly went away. I should of read the warning signs then and passed on that particular bike but it was the last one available in the country at the time.

I definitely won't be riding this bike anymore for safety's sake and when my new rim arrives from Germany in a month or so (why cant Australia stock parts for these bikes in Australia!)they can check out the bike more thoroughly then. I have been told the norm for BMW dealing with defective engines is to install a short block motor?

Question; If the motor rattles and knocks so profusely, would this rumbling not throw out the knock censors, causing false readings? Would the engine retard or advance when a knock is detected? Either way it may be what is causing the loud intermittent tick, tick racket while the motor is under load? I should add the rattle/knock is predominately coming from the left hand side of the engine.

I'll post the outcome and if anyone has any other idea's fire away...

Cheers

my 11000 mile gsa is not noisy, get yours looked at again.

loose lower triple clamp bolts are par for the course. mine did it regularly until i lobbed the torque wrench & did them up by feel. never happened again.

The triple clamps were loose after 1000 klm's. Do all GS's suffer this phenomenon? If so Ill lock tight them.

A bit more information on the engine rattle. Its important I try to narrow down the problem and present it to my BMW Mech so I don't get fobbed off again. If I continue to ride this bike and the engine explodes causing an accident then it wont be caused by my ignorance.
This bike rattled/knocked like this from day one with 7 klm's on the clock when I picked it up. The original 07 GSA was tight.

The engine dose not rattle at idle and revs cleanly. Rattle and knocks come thru over 3000 rpm and not really audible below that. One guy at another forum suggested I change gear sooner to avoid the rumble:eek:
Yeah right ride my brand new $30,000 motor cycle like a girl to prolong the time frame between blow ups :D

Someone mentioned something about balance shaft weights causing this rattle? Feels like I've brought a time bomb and if it rattles like this with only 3000 klm's on the clock what will it be like with 60,000 klm's (which is what it will do in two years easy).

Iron Side Up

Mine been loose several times during the two years I've been riding my GS. I've been recommended to use Locktite and did this winther. I'll looking forward to spring again with tighten bolts.:beerjug:

maybe I have read this post wrong - but if this bike is new and came from a dealer what was done at the pre delivery inspection.

I would be taking it back to the delaer and complaining to BMW and anyone else that came to mind.
