Had my new GS stolen and recovered yesterday. Found with no seats on bike. Has anyone got a front seat which I believe is the same as previous GS's or a rear seat which I believe was changed for the 2017 model?
The steering lock was broken in a second and all was captured on cctv which I will post later on.

Sorry to hear that.

I have a rear seat from a 2017 model as I replaced my seats with the BMW Exclusive seats. PM me if interested.

I've already sold the front seat which was the low seat which came with my lowered chassis bike.

Sorry to hear that. Same storey here. Bike scootered off after breaking the steering lock. Recovered by an off duty policeman who stopped the thugs. But they had ripped the back seat and front. Removed the electrics.... strangely appeared very planned.
How badly is the steering lock damaged for you? Repairable? Best wishes.

Hi Wellsy I have a spare front seat. It has been repacked for more comfort.

I am in Burton on Trent so not a million miles away. Happy to meet half way if you want to take a look?

Currently in Greece and not back until wednesday

Regards

Thanks for all the offers. I think i'm sorted. Still trying to up load cctv which I hope to do tonight. It shows 2 bikes entering my works car park well off the main road, one is a look out whilst the 2 on the other bike break the steering lock in a second. They then push my bike using a foot. Whole incident took less than 40 seconds. Bike found 6 miles away about an hour later on waste land minus it's seats. It was recovered by a recovery company who charged me £150 to collect my bike the following day!
Obviously will have to look at repairing steering lock as long as it's not silly money. Also will consider GAP insurance as I hate to think how much I'd have lost financially if it had not been found. Also have to up the security.

Why can't bike manufacturers make steering locks which cannot be defeated. If they couldn't be defeated, bikes would be very difficult if not almost impossible to steal without the key.

It's not rocket science ?

If one is nicked they sell a brand new shiny one perhaps :nenau

Did it have data tag on ? If so there maybe some markings on the seat , along with cctv it might help catch the cnuts, glad it's been returned and it's ok .

Just been comparing the steering lock on my new GSA with my older bikes and a mates r1200 gsa tc , I think the main problem on the newer bike is that there is a large amount of slack at the steering head when the lock is on allowing at least 4 or 5 inches of play at the ends of the handlebars which due to their width gives anyone trying to break the lock a large amount of leverage.

Combined with the movement it is more than enough to quickly and easily smash the lock.

On my 2014 model GSA which locked the steering in either direction (left or right) there was far less movement at the bars when it was locked and allowed less effective leverage , my mates tc is the same .

My old Honda XR250 and even my CCM 404 which also have steering locks incorporated into ignition lock have little or no movement at the bars when the steering is locked and on my GSX11000 Katana which has a lock built into the side of the steering head there is zero movement at the bars when locked and so less effective leverage to smash the steering lock assembly.

Good enough reason for me to always use a secondary U Lock , chain or Disc lock on a newer GS/GSA

Really sorry to read about this - but its a salutary lesson for me. I've been in the habit of leaving my bike in the work's garage on the basis that access requires a blipper and there is an on site security guy with CCTV. But its fair to say that it would not be that difficult for a couple of chancers to do what you describe. Secondary locks from here on in, even though its a little bit less convenient.

I don't think the bike would have been stolen if I had fitted even a cheap disc lock but I think the thieves knew it only had the steering lock as security. I work in a school so it may have been a pupil letting an older sibling/mate know the situation. The bike was parked down a long drive with electronic gates which happened to be open as they were broken at the time. The bike was taken at 3.50pm and amazingly no other person was around at the time.
The seats data tagged so if anyone comes across them let me know.
Not yet had chance to find out how much it will cost to repair the steering lock but as I now fit extra security I will let it be if it is silly money.
Police did check the bike for fingerprints but did not come to look at CCTV.
Read insurance policy which did state that if new bike is stolen within 6 months they will replace it with a new bike although they certainly didn't intimate this in my conversation with them immediately following the theft. Will buy GAP insurance but not until the 6 months has passed.
