my neighbour bought a new 1200 about 4 months ago, we went for a ride yesterday, loads of smoke and noise and a rapid stop - dealer came back today and said the RH exhaust valve broke off into the cylinder... oh dear! complete new RH side needed.

looks like the old issues have still not been fixed.

Why would they?

Random failure.....................luck of the draw:comfort

He must be very unlucky :nenau
I know that you supposed to take it easy for the first 600 miles , did he had his oil level checked before the ride ?

I have never been particularly lucky, which is why I avoided the BMW lottery and went back to the Japs.

You can argue forever about if they are, or are not more reliable "on average", but they are certainly more consistent with far fewer "common random failures", especially of the show stopping / very expensive kind.

a rather well known random failure...

Out of the hundreds of 1000's of all 1200 series bikes sold since 2004 the amount of r/hand pot - valve & piston interface is thankfully pretty rare

I've only seen/ heard about 10-15, in the last 8 years

On here I have some good friends or acquaintances who have had consecutive 1200's & they have never had a problem, many have never had a breakdown whilst touring either

Perhaps its just coming on here where everyone moans about them breaking down ....;)

about the strength of it :thumb2

however don't be to convincing as we don't want to dilute the Baiting :D:D:D

In all my time riding bikes and driving cars, I only know of ONE person who had a dropped valve. I burnt a valve out on my first car (probably due to unleaded fuel and my constant thrashing it).

Here we are in 2012 and the only vehicles it seems to happen to are BMW bikes.

I had to :D go into any Bike shop and look at the mileage on any 5 years + Jap bike and you'd be lucky to see any with 5K + some not even breaking 1K.
How you can gather statistics when most jap bikes cover so little real world mileage is beyond me.:blast
Someone will be along with 300K Blackbird in a minute:blagblah
My Fridge has more inticement than modern Jap4's

My Norton Commmando dropped a valve on me back in 1973. Now you know of TWO. :thumb :D

my 77 guzzi convert burnt a valve where a previous owner had set the mixture too lean and advanced the timing too much
