Can anybody shed some light on breakdown cover in Morocco. I am insured with Carole Nash who have issued me with a Green card and also informed me that I could use the normal European breakdown cover in Morooco. However, I double checked that with them today and apparently they will not cover me for breakdown whilst there?

Does anybody have any suggestions (sensible ones please!). :beerjug:

Oh dear! I see that you're riding a 1200.

:blast

Keep a stash of Euros (as it's a 1200, make it a big stash). When the bike fails, find the nearest local yoof and tell him to fetch both the locals who have a pick-up trucks. When they arrive, hold a Dutch auction to see who'll take you and your dead steed back to the ferry port/menders/scrap yard/ wherever.

Guy, this is a North African country we are talking of here..... AA, RAC, Green Flag etc etc are just not going to pop over no matter how long you wait.

In the event of a major unrepairable failure, just pay a 'local' with a truck to get you back to the ferry terminal. Once back in Spain call whoever is providing the European cover :thumb2

:::.Edit, Greg beat me to it.:::

Thanks for the heads up- I was misled by Carole Nash who had raised my hopes, they even gave me a French tel number to call.

Let's hope it's not needed and if it is- well, I guess it's all part of the fun finding a solution.

Cheers

euro cover

I had a problem in France and called the AA who provided me with extended breakdown cover.

They asked where I had been and I said France, Spain and Morocco.

The kind people explained that as I had been out of the coverage area all my cover was no longer valid and that it was all in the terms and conditions I should have read. I explained to them that I had paid by card on the morning of departure and had not seen any terms and conditions. Took a few phone calls to explain to them the error of their ways and they did eventually agree to honour the cover.

I did tell them on the phone exactly where I was going and for how long and they were keen to take my money.

There are no national breakdown companies in Morocco.

If you can find an insurance company who DO provide breakdown cover there (and there are some around), they will instead have a network of 'approved agents'....people like Peter at Biker's home in Ouzazarte are signed on to a list, then are called out as and when.

I've had breakdown cover over there, but we never bothered trying it out......it is, as said above, far easier and faster to grab the nearest kid on a moped and for a few dirhams, they will sort you out.

If you go near any major towns, you'll often/usually be accosted by some greasy bloke on a scooter anyway, asking if you want anything fixed/ a hotel/ a woman/ young boy/ camel/ food , as his brother down the road is able to supply all of these for a very reasonable rate.

ALWAYS agree a price beforehand if possible.
DON'T be afraid to follow a youth on a scooter into the backstreets....you won't end up being botty raped (unless you're really really lucky :toungincheek) and you will be sorted out pronto :thumb2

GRIN, SMILE, shake hands and generally be nice, and there's very little that cannot be fixed in Morocco (I've even had a blown sealed ECU unit that was repaired by a local chappy.....he spent an hour digging all the silicone out with a screwdriver, soldered a new resistor in, sealed it all up again and it cost about a fiver :thumb2

Boots de-soled 'cos the heat has melted the glue? Give them to someone at a hotel and in the morning they will miraculously re-appear, fixed :D

Broken frame/subframe? Every town/village has a bloke who runs a welding kit off a couple of truck batteries who will 'soldeur' (weld) it up for you (watch carefully to make sure they disconnect the motronix though :blast)

Quite seriously, having a breakdown in Morocco is huge fun and as long as you keep calm, look on the bright side and keep smiling, it will all add to any trip you have...I thoroughly recommend the experience :thumb2

Cheers Fanum- sounds really exciting! The trip could be boring without some sort of an issue that we have to rely on the locals to fix for us. Can't wait to get over there now.

You going on your own? We used to have a spare fuel pump controller between us and a thousand ways to mend a puncture. Im sure we had ring antena problem once we taped the spare key under the headstock if I remember that fixed it. half a litre of oil per bike and job's a good un. Hell what else is there to go wrong.

There will be 3 of us. Gathering some basic bits together such as tyre levers, puncture repair kits, fuses, oil, small gerry fuel can etc... We will split it all amongst the three bikes to keep verbally weight down

Would it be fair to assume that the fuel pump controller has been sorted on later bikes? Mine is a GSA 2011.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a "ring antenna" :hide

EWS, it stands for engine wont start. its the chip in the key that talks to bit under the key barrel. When it fails you are stuck. I think you will find that all things BMW especially on the 1200 have been sorted. So you wont need breakdown cover.

The sense of humour is coming to me very quickly :D

I'd rather you explain from your experience! :eek

A Friend of mine (Irish, living and working in Ireland etc) is a member of ADAC (the German equivalent of the AA).

It’s cheaper than the AA, and includes breakdown recovery for cars and bikes in countries not covered by Carole Nash, AA ETC, including Morocco, and Turkey.

He says there is no problem joining from outside Germany. He has used it on biking trips to Europe with no problem; they have English speaking operators available.

I’ve been meaning to look into joining myself but never got around to it.

Might be what you’re looking for.

I'm assuming you have completed your trip by now, am also planning solo trip to Morocco this Sept. A bit of a Military redundancy, mid life crisis come need to get away thing. Wouls be interested in your experience.

figured there wouldn't be any official breakdown cover but not expecting to struggle with this, especially having ridden the Armstrongs, through the majority of the shit holes in the middle east. My GSA can't be any worse than those buckets.

my plan is to wing it from start to finish, thats about it for a plan, in good old military fashion (I'll have to drop that at some stage). Got to more fun that way.

Mind you only just found out that my BMW insurance won't cover me for Morocco, im assuming I can get cover from another provider for the trip. Any suggestions.

Sounds like there shouldn't be a shortage of others to hook up with. i know nothing of the country other than an old black and white with Humphry Boghart which I think is probably all I need!!!

seriously though, if there are any places that are a must see, i'd love to include them in my itinery, plan thing.

Anyway all I've got to do now is sit on my hands until then! cheers

Hi Jim
Plenty of ride reports and routes for you to read through whilst you're waiting, just get Michelin Map 742 and make a list of what grabs you then go with the flow.
Third party insurance is mandatory in Morocco and is available in the Country, about £7 a day last time we went. Never bothered with theft or breakdown insurance myself.

cheers-Tony
