Breaking R1150 for parts

I have been struggling to sell my 2001 R1150GS and wondered what demand there might be for the parts if I was to break the bike.

I appreciate this make take some time and will involve some hassle but I would have thought it would be worth more as parts and I guess an engine with 60K and in vgc would be worth £500b at least?

The bike also has lots of extras.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Might be worth speaking to Motorworks to see if they can make you an offer as they part them out.

Not worth doing it yourself you'll be left with lots of stuff that doesn't shift and then you have to tell the DVLA etc.

I disagree. Here's some advice from Neil Murray, who writes for various motorcycle magazines, posted on uk.rec.motorcycles

"An engine that's a proven runner is always
worth more than one that's out of the frame and can't be tested.

I did exactly this when breaking an old XS650 a while back - the lump
fetched over £300 because I could prove it started and ran sweetly, and
the buyer, an XS freak, was quite happy to lend a hand removing it. With
two of you on the job, it shouldn't take longer than 45 minutes, maybe
an hour.

For the other bits, clean them up so they photograph nicely, and bung
them on Ebay with a 99p start and no reserve.

Sooner or later you'll be left with a pile of theoretically unsellable
bits that you'd normally just throw away. Gather all these together,
photograph them as a pile, put a 99p price tag on them, and believe me,
somebody will come along and pay you for taking them away.

Working on this basis (desirable parts first, less desirable parts
second, scrap bits last), I reckon to dispose of a bike, completely, in
three weeks."

Neil has done this with loads of "projects" he's bought. He writes about the successful projects in magazine articles but he also buys donor bikes for particular parts. The restored bike is then sold on for a profit whilst the donor bikes are stripped for spares and sold on Ebay.

Steptoe is right! you won't get rid of everything just like that and you are bound to have it clogging your yard or garage for a considerable length of time

Remove the extras start it on E bay at your lowest of low price and then give the buyer first refusal on extras and whats left flog on e bay

Plenty of lower mileage engines out there at a lot less than £500.

If you're struggling to sell it you're asking too much. Simple.


Don't go by the bmw breakers prices, you'll get no where near the prices they ask. They have ben advertising for years and their names are well known, if you want a part and quick you call them and buy it. And they only get called when a part is needed, people don't buy loads of parts to keep "just in case" they might need it.

No one knows you, so you won't get any random calls. You'll have to advertise continually and once the the very very few parts that are genuinally wanted get bought,(and they'll have to be cheap), you'll be left with everything else.

An individual with a bike is much better off selling it as a complete bike, you get the money in one lump ( rather than £20 one week, £70 another week etc etc ), without any dismantling work or storage issues.

And ebay is crap for getting good prices for parts. Everyone wants a bargain. And work out your actual costs of selling something for 99p on ebay, that then needs packing and posting and deducting ebay costs.

broke my rr2 blade track bike just after crimbo blew the gearbox at almeria in nov bit of fekin about but well worth the effort got back what i paid still got some bits left which i must get round to punting just be realistic when pricing and it will go

Engine and running gear from a k1100/k100 16valve will always sell. I've sold plenty over the years to grinnal to put into his scorpians.

I've got garage fulls of all the other shite accumulated from over 20 years of breaking and selling and if you hadn't have bought your k100 16v for a good price you wouldn't have made so much money. But as you'll find out they are few and far between at that price.
Plus I sold a complete K100 16v last year for £1400. I wouldn't have made so much if i'd spent time breaking it to end up with same amount of money.


Plus the guy is/was selling an R1150GS, that i expect cost him quite a bit of money to start with, not a few hundred quid.
