OK I'm getting fed up having a jacket that is waterproof, yet waterlogged and cold and clammy.

Is it any better having a waterproof overjacket. Ok not breathable, (could be goretex or similar I suppose?)

Opinions / thoughts please.

Klim do a very lightweight Gortex over jacket but it's VERY dear at around £170 LINKY - it is the biz though and will fold up into a biggish pocket :thumb2

I use an army surplus Gortex jacket over my Twat (c) jacket when I can be bothered - works a treat and IIRC cost me £30ish.

I have one of these from BMW to go over my twat suit: Klima Komfort jacket - it's goretex so you can wear it for a while without getting wet from the inside and has decent refective panels which is what you want in the rain. It's not cheap tho...

Master V from Hein Gericke- Gore-tex XCR bonded to the outside layer- doesn't hold the water- it just runs off . Best jacket / trousers I've ever owned ( and I've had a few :augie)

Not cheap but there's loads of offers on at Hein Gericke- I got 20% off when I got mine ;)

Gore-Tex XCR bonded to the outside is really the best way to go :thumb2

As Ottomunch said, the new British Army Goretex Jackets are good value.
They not only come in DPM camo, but also in sand/brown desert camo, which makes a bit more sense due to the greater visibility. They also have matching Goretex overpants. Works a treat. One seller is "strikeforce army supply", just google it.

Dito,I have the trousers as well . I managed to get the suit for £100 when they changed the colour to black ( mine is blue) . Normal price is about £250/£300 for the suit:eek:

good waterproof jacket and trousers and then a cheap set of J and S over jacket and trousers, just for when heavy downpour, works a treat.

But don't buy the cheap over suit from hein gericke. Its about £50. The zip goes across the body and has a flap to protect the zip from the wind/rain. Unfortunately as you sit, your crotch area creates a few ruffles and now the zip flap is pointing skywards. A small pool collects, it becomes too much for the zip and....... then you end up with a "just pee-ed yourself" sensation but in a cold way.
Its okay for showers but a good down pour and you have pee pee trousers.

Missus bought goretex trousers from Hein Gericke at the same time and was completely dry in the same storm.
(The reason for her purchase was her ever increasing need for a different size, but i never told you that)

I've just bought the Akito Desert Motorcycle Jacket and bottoms both for €280. You lads can get them cheaper though.

I bought them because they came highly recommended for a friend of mine that has used them for over two years now. Well worth a look for the money. Jacket can be got for around £109 on some english web site.

I used a 5.99 job from aldi for 2 years, never leaked... what more do you need? Cag in a Bag

I went into hein gericke today to look at some waterproof gloves that fit inside the cuffs of one of my jackets.

I comented on waterprrof but waterlogged clothing. he showed me the goretext cleaner that is chucked in the washing machine. I always thought this was odd, saying it was specifiaccly made for goretex clothing. I always though that goretex, is inside the jacket, so would not gain anything from cleaning?

Anyway, Ibought some of this, and the spray to go with it, that makes the water run off the jacket, instead of passing through the outer, and being repelled by the inner goretex.

Time will tell.

Shop bloke also said that it would be a good idea to remove the washing machine, soap powder, and softeneer tray , and remove alll traces of these prior to putting te supr whizz goretex wash in there.

I was doing this at 11:30 tonight:blast thriling eh?

Drip bloody dry! Typical, overcast damp day, so the jacket will be hanging in the garage for about 3 days to dry out.:(

Hang on.................

You've paid £400 - £450 for a BMW Rallye jacket ..............................

and you had to buy one of these Klima jackets to go on top?

Does the "twat jacket" make much sense? :nenau

Al

I guess it's always going to
be a compromise in one way or another. I always get too hot in all the gear in summer and Ive yet to come across a jacket that is so cool in summer yet still has a high level of protection.
I do, however, use it all year round so in the depths of winter out comes the over jacket and heated fleece and Im warm and dry too - works for me :)

PS I bought my Twat (c) jacket 2nd hand and the Gortex over jacket fir £30

Its a common misconception and also a marketing dream that goretex can be re treated!
I went on a goretex course a few years ago when I worked at a BMW dealership.
Goretex is from scotland, it was discovered by mistake and is a closely guarded secret in how its made, it has many patents, which is why there are so many other 'copies'.
Basically goretex is a membrane which after its production process is full of holes, These holes are, smaller than a water droplet molecule but bigger than a water vapour particle, hence waterproof and breathable. Goretex works better if there is a temp difference, thats why it always works well for walkers and other kind of sports as you generate a lot of heat. They also say it works better when wet to get rid of moisture on the inside!
However not always good for a biker as there isnt as much heat difference each side of the goretex so it doesnt really know which way to pass moisture vapour if you like.
Hence going on this theory, no re-treaters are ever going to work as goretex is not a treatment waterproofer like say a silicone coating, it just is a culinder basically.
Goretex only leaks when eother the seams split, it has a hole in it or it can actually wear out, ie go thin.
If you wash goretex and use softener it will make it leak as the softener makes the goretex wick moisture in.

As I said, it's inside the jacket, so effectively protected from the micro pores getting blocked. The gore tex cleaner, is probably just approved by Gore as it does no damage to the Gore tex, but cleans up the jacket material. I was mainly interested in stopping the jacket from becoming waterlogged in the first place.

My understanding of gore tex without resorting to the internet, is that it is PTFE with millions of small holes.

just googled it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gore-Tex

A while ago I read a 'roadtest' of various GoreTex jackets written by some outdoors guy. In his article he said that a well used working (i.e. mountain rescue team) GoreTex jacket could be knackered in around three months...

However, my elderly Rukka jacket with GoreTex, simply doesn't leak, nor does my equally elderly Sidi jacket which doesn't have GoreTex or any other 'Tex's'.

I think it's probably down to the quality of the garment and its design - which isn't necessarily reflected in the cost of the thing. For example BMW waterproof clothing which needs additional waterproof clothing to keep it dry!
