Breathalysers

I picked mine up in a French motorfactors. 1 Euro.

If your trip is before it comes law buy when you get over there.

11 euro fine if you haven't got one. Why bother carrying more tat?

Bought pack of 2 from Amazon £5.50. Bit more expensive but easier than fiddling around when I get there and delivered in 2 days. It would just my luck if the gendarmes are waiting for us just outside the ferry terminal.

Because the frenchys have made a law to get rid of some surplus stock held by their MPs :D
I dont know of any sensible reason either :blast

It's a racket. Can't think of any good reason to carry one either. If you're drinking, don't drive, end of. What if you have one glass of wine or beer then blow into your 'first' breathalyser, find you're ok to drive, then head off up the road, only to be nicked by plod with their much more accurate breathalyser.

The law doesn't actually come into force until November 1st, see here so enjoy a breathalyser free summer.

I received this email just two days ago...

"I don't know whether it will be of any interest to any Club members but a couple of days ago the French Government delayed the law for alcohol test kits being carried on all motor vehicles (other than those up to 50cc) until 1 November, 2012.
Before it was 1 July 2012. No reason was given but in my town (GAP) there has been for a good few days a "rupture de stock" at the wholesale companies.

Here that means there are none available to buy either in the pharmacies, the supermarkets or the "Tabacs". Which might be why the effective date has been put off. Over here "on the grapevine" we know that several thousand of these kits were imported from China (at about 2-3€ each) and have been found to be defective. That will not be made public over here. (That's France!).

I see from the Club messages that those destined for Morocco intend to travel by Spain (I am no longer informed) and I have no news whatever for those visiting the French Alps (no news either)".

November has been quoted as the official 'fine' date since the off back in Feb/March

I bought a pack of 2 breathalysers for £5 off eBay for my trip to the Pyrenees.

I go to France often enough, so it will stay in the panniers. My feeling is that life is complicated enough, I don't fancy arguing with an officious French copper whose having a bad day just to save £5. Sometimes, it's just easier and less stressful to comply.

I wanted to go down the arguing with an officious French policeman route, with my not very good French, but Mrs. H. agrees with Taff and has invested £5 to avoid any such possible problems.

NB Mrs. H doesn't drive and I don't drink which is why I wanted to go down the arguing with the French policeman route as I do rather resent spending money for something I will not need.

I think the French authorities logic is that you may need it if you or a friend decide to have a drink and are unsure whether you're over the limit to drive.

Fon't forget, these breathalysers work in this country as well mind so if a mate has had a skinful the night before, offer him one before he gets behind the wheel. :thumb2

+1 :thumb2

for £5 it's not worth the potential hassle of Plod with an easy GB plated target.

I did hear (whilst in Germany) that you need to carry two! You can be fined if you dont have one on your person whilst driving/riding, and that if you are stopped and tested ( #1), the policeman can still fine you for NOT having another...cant guarantee how acurate this is...but thats what I heard from someone who deals with French bikers etc....

...Got mine...1 Euro I think...

those are NF which is good, but i see occasions where people have bought them in the Uk only to find out they are no good....

i can just imagine the huge mark up the ferry companies will be selling them for!
