Brief lockup from 5th into 6th

A couple of times now my 04 12GS has briefly, less than a second, locked the back wheel when going from 5th into 6th at full tilt....yup overtaking...but thankfully it unlocks again before you know it....however, I've only had the bike less than 2 weeks...and twice is a bit too often. Not overly worried about it locking up mid bend as I'm certainly not going to be full tilt shifting into 6th but I don't think it should be doing it at all.
I know (read it here) BMW recalled a batch of 1150GS's back in 2002 for this issue, gearbox trouble....but noone here has mentioned it with the 12.

I have read here about the bike stalling when the throttle is wound past where, I presume, the electronics thinks it should stop. But it was a definite lockup...tyre dragging, not going round, etc.

Anyone else had this experience ?

Thats a new one on me, there was a guy on here that had his 1200 lock up for moment, between the lower gears, whilst negociating bend.

I can't say I would be happy with the prospect of a seized back wheel at over 100mph:eek:

Just imagine the forces involved in jamming the transmission at that speed, i'm surprised the engine/gearbox stayed together:nenau

Something is seriously (and potentially fatally) wrong with that bike. As Shep says the forces involved must be staggering and destructive. I would take it back to the dealer, slowly and avoiding sixth or better still get them to collect it. I wouldn't ride it. Having had a rear wheel lock up on me at speed in the past, it is not something I would want to re-experience.

Just thinking and please don't take offence, but there's no chance it was the rev limiter cutting in, my 04 1200 would as easily hit the revlimiter in the top gears as my newer adv will hit it in the lower gears.:nenau

And hitting the rev limiter does feel like you're coming to a dead halt. Hitting the rev limiter in 5th would mean going quite fast, though...

Personally, I think I'd err on the side of caution and have it looked at by the dealer you bought it from (assuming you got it from a dealer).

Does sound like the rev limiter, also check your Hand Guards aren't causing your clutch lever to be activated, as it may induce a little clutch slip allowing the engine to rev quickly to the limiter when "at full tilt"

Failing that, get it to your nearest dealer to have it checked out sooner rather than later.

Not sure I would agree with the rev limiter theory - my 1200 just breaks into a misfire when I put it on the limiter - quite handy really because it prompts me to change gear :)

If he's hitting the rev limiter in 5th, mid bend whilst overtaking then he's on the wrong bike:eek:

nah, just REALLY using it

way to go zubrowka :)
hope you were overtaking some pompous a** squid

My '04 R1200GS has NEVER done this in 26,000 miles. Your bikes symptoms are extremely dangerous.

A mate with a Moto-Guzzi V11 had a similar thing where a wiring fault on his sidestand switch caused the bike to cut the ignition as an intermittent fault, causing occasional lock-up (due to sudden engine braking), but not just in 5th/6th like yours does.

As others have said, get it to a dealer (carefully) and get it inspected ASAP before you get hurt.

Thanks for the advice.....obviously it was mid corner with my shoulder on the floor whilst pulling away from a guy on his GXR1000...and on knobblies too !!

I appreciate what you say about the rev limiter but it was a lockup as opposed to just stopping accelerating...but I will go and check exactly what that feels like....although judging by the "don't ride it" advice I feel both stupid and like some gladiator off to do battle with a mchine that's gonna get me....hmmm better not tempt fate.:blast

Good news is, it's off for a new rear shock under warranty next week (surely can't be a connection there!) and mentioned it to Dalkeith. They're a good bunch of guys and said they'd check it out.
I'll let you know.

That sounds realy interesting:eek: ..locking the back wheel at 120 mph:augie ,
that's some serious mechanical problem. I would expect the transmission to be making noises after that.
Could this be a <STRIKE><STRIKE>grind</STRIKE></STRIKE> wind up!;)

Hi Chris,
Honest not a wind up, and not 120 either or in a corner...I don't know what hitting the rev limiter is like yet on the 1200 but I imagine you'll feel the engine breaking. Only one way to find out. And yes, given the forces involved I'd imagine some sort of damage.
Anyway, does bother me a bit, I wouldn't expect it and worse if the missus was on the back....It's getting checked next week.

I'll post back any findings....

Hitting the rev limiter feels like you've just lost all power to the engine, no engine breaking is involved, you roll off or change up and power is restored.
It can feel very abrupt as the 1200 hits the limiter very easily :angel ;)

Yup - I hit the limiter in third whilst dealing with a mobile chicane this morning and promptly missed fourth :blast It just misfires a bit but no sign of a lock up

Get the bike checked ASAP

same thing happened to me a couple of years back before the gearbox disintegrated on the M4.

Any more on this?

Just to finish this link for reference....

After over 3k miles on it now...and learning that the gearbox isn't japanese...it has never missed a beat. I won't use the word "problem" because the problem may well have been me.
The bike is quite simply brilliant. Apart from the battery deteriorating....lucky it started as I was being rolled off the ferry....it's been faultless.
