We’re going BF Portsmouth St Malo this coming Friday 28th, 8.15pm sailing.

We’ve done loads of crossings and usually arrive a good 2hrs before departure, but this trip timing will be a bit tight.

Is there any actually advantage to arrive that early?

This is a car trip, not a bike trip and it’s a Range Rover Sport so we get put in the higher vehicles bit anyway.

Key thing is get on board quickly enough to get dinner booked!

Brittany Ferries stipulate a latest check in time - an hour before departure?

I've jumped on the IOM ferry as they've been pulling the gang plank up so to speak but i would'nt want to risk that on a big sailing;

the timetable says the boat arrives at 6.20pm from France so nobody is getting on until about an hour before departure so checking in after 7pm won't be a problem but I would not leave it until after 730pm just in case there are delays clearing customs

I’ve just done Portsmouth to St Malo albeit on a motorbike a week or two ago.

1 hour was more than sufficient - passport check is after you disembark in St Malo so no queues this side (just the Brittany Ferries check in booth in Portsmouth).

Edit: they didn’t let us book a time for dinner in the posher restaurant - it was just a turn up and see. It was quite full by the time we started sailing.

Generally with BF it's 45 mins before departure although we've pushed this a few times.

There's one big advantage if you're in a normal size car (ie not a Rangie!) to getting there late which is that if the ferry has a lifting deck (there's probably a correct term for this!) they fill this first so if you get there after they've done this you get put on the lower deck and then get unloaded first.

Thanks chaps, looks like I’ll be safe time wise then, should be there by 7.

Thanks for the tip on dinner - used to be able to book, but as it’s a later sailing I guess they just want to get people through

Once, due to an issue with our map ( we couldn't read the fucking thing properly ) we arrived at Santander with minutes to spare before the boat sailed

They gave us a motor escort at high speed to make sure we got on which we did but it was touch and go and not something I want to repeat as wizzing along the docks at about 70 was whilst fun also alarming so my advice is its worth hanging around fr the odd hour and avoid the stress of nearly missing the boat
