There I was thinking not far to go now about a mile from home, the sun still shining and my 1200GS just died. I stopped, turned it over and it started and just died. Thankfully I have a years warranty, phoned up BMW assistance and an hour and a half later, a recovery van turned up and said it must be the engine management system. I got my wife to come down in the car, and put my top box in the back. The bike is now on it's way back to South London Motorcycles to be looked at hopefully tomorrow some time. Looking on the bright side of things, it was'nt raining/snowing and not to late. Be interesting to find out the problem and before anyone says it, yes I did have a full tank of petrol:) Watch this space.

Sure as apples is apples

... With no warning on the instrument panel it'll be the fuel pump controller :thumb

... New, used, what mileage?

... Easy fix, just inconvenient when it gets you and doubley dead feckin' irritating that BuMW haven't permanently sorted this bug yet :nono

Mine refused to start on Monday morning:spitfire and had to take the car to work:eek: called BMW emergency service who were nothing short of absolutely superb!
Arranged for them to come to my house first thing on Tuesday morning, arrived before 9am and had a fuel pump relay with him which sure enough, turned out to be the fault.

Annoyed at the breakdown but as always BMW (namely Vines) manage to yet again turn a negative into a positive experience:thumb2

And they all lived happily ever after.......

Yeah its a used 05 plate with 33K miles. Goes like a dream when its running. :)

AFAIK they have, with the new controller. They just haven't performed a full recall, which is understandable given that it is a fairly small percentage that actually have the problem. It would be nice if they at least did a check & replace at service time, mind.

Hi Patboy,

I bought an 05 1200GS a couple of weeks back from Simon at SLM and the same thing happened to me on Reigate Hill in the first week. It was also the Fuel Pump Relay but they replaced it straight away with a newer model which will (so I've been told) go the distance. Really great service too, so I'm not that pissed off about it as I've now got faith in the dealer and BMW Assist to bail me out if it goes tits again.

SLM are having an off-road type effort this Saturday at Box Hill if you're up for it. The details are on their website. I've threatened to pitch up and am a total beginner on GSs and off-road so it'll be a giggle.

The last one was good fun. I took the KLX instead of the 1day old 1200GS!

.......you really can't fault them for their optimism can you :)

They'll be giving you a front engine plate that doesn't rust next :jes

Cheers Trickywoo, Yes it was the fuel pump relay on mine to but only picked it up this morning Sat, so a bit late for the off road thing thanks. Yes i was quite impressed by South London as the bike was actually ready Thursday but I could'nt get down till Sat. I had a loan car from BMW assistance (BMW 318i 3 series in silver) and very nice it was too :) Shame I had to give it back and revert to my Honda :)

My 06 GS did this two weeks after 6000 mile service in January- the bike started and run for a couple of seconds then died- BMW assist were excellent and arrived at after 40 minutes- immediate diagnosis and replacement of fuel pump relay.

This fault is potentially dangerous- imagine total power loss in the fast lane of the M6- if this was happening to BMW cars I believe a recall would be issued

Happened to me on my first weekend with a brand new GS12 in 2006. I thought that it had to be the engine management, since it stopped in traffic 500yards from home. On the first callout the non BMW subcontractor didn't even touch it. he said it might invalidate my warranty. On the third callout, they recovered it, and it turned out to be a dud battery. The replacement battery lasted about a year, and then I replaced it with an aftermarket stronger one.

Just to add to this thread, since I have had the new fuel pump relay fitted, the engine does not feel quite as smooth. Maybe its me, but it feels a bit lumpy! Do they need to reset anything after fitting? I had it in the workshop a few months back because I was'nt getting good MPG and it was fine afterwards. They adjusted the fuel lines or something.

Same thing just happened to me this morning on the way to work. It was a bit 'interesting' as I was filtering along the Edinburgh City Bypass at the time and there wasn't any hard shoulder... Even the AA rescue truck man was a bit freaked by the traffic.

Hoping the bike can be fixed quickly as I am due to go down South for a few days for the WSB meet at Brands.

BTW, the bike is an 05 GS with around 30,600 on the clock. Obviously not long since its 30k service!

Kai :(
