Hi all,

I've been stuck in worse places, but nevertheless, stuck is stuck.

The short of it is my 2001 single spark R1150gs is cutting out shortly after starting and the lights all go out for a minute or two, before starting fine again, and then cutting out.

It has been running rough for a few days, but just started cutting out last night, although I managed to ride 50 miles after the first instance. I thing that HAL Sensor is the obvious suspect. But why are the electrics cutting out intermittently?

Help and suggestions very much appreciated.

Just stating the obvious, check battery connection is tight.

Cut the cable ties that are securing the wire from the bottom of the ignition barrel. Can you see/feel any obvious breaks in the harness there?

Leave the wire lose and see if that makes a difference.

Keep us posted.

Another one to get off the list - Cables around the headstock coming out of the Ignition barrel...?

Ha! Same thought. But you did give more detail :thumb2

One other. What happens when it misbehaves? Do you get a click from the starter solenoid? Just wondering if the grease plate in the starter is coming off and starting to make contact with the coils?

Okay, we seem to be on to something with the ignition cables. It turns out the power was going out when I turned the handlebars. Which sugg sets a short in there...

Great! Almost definitely that bloody cable coming out of the Ignition barrel. Just don't turn any corners, that'll be easy in those mountains. Haha

I suggest you get to a hotel or pension. Park up, get the tank off and get that cable out. Take off about 2" of the black sheathing nearest the barrel and see what you can see. It is possible to fix this, but it is a fiddle and probably needs a soldering iron. Alternatively, try and find a dealer to buy a new one locally.

Keep us posted.

Good to see your getting close to the problem.
I work as an auto spark and was out in the alps last week

A lot of electrical issues are either sensor related , and these can be temperature relative. If you think it's a particular sensor, when the fault happens cool the sensor with water to see if it comes back to life.
Bad connections , usually corrosion in connectors
Wiring damaged by rubbing through, usually on frame.
I see more breakage in wires that move , like switch gear wiring, as wiring Is a lot thinner nowadays.

Good luck

I’m no expert, but any chance this could be the problem? :)

Image not showing up?

Cut the cable ties from that wire that currently prevent it moving, leaving the wire lose might keep you going as it will mean it is no longer flexing at the previously stressed point.

Can’t see your image above.

Okay, like a schoolboy I’ve somehow managed to engage the steering lock. I didn’t even know it worked. Now I can’t unlock it! How do I do that?

Give the bars a little wiggle when you're turning the key in the ignition.

Great bit of corrosion there! But yes, looks like you've found the problem. Well done.

Now you just need s soldering iron! But it'll work if you just twist the wires together and tape them up.

Mind you don't yank those wires too much as the solder joints inside the barrel can be dodgy too (basically where those sites terminate inside the barrel - part of that little loom).

Thanks Slippery, thanks Gentlemen. I’ve done a temporary repair and i am on the road again.

UKGSer..... your 4th emergency service and probably fixed quicker than calling a breakdown service :D

And yet another reason to listen to the same old warning i've been posting for way more than 10 years now, cut all the cable ties holding all the handlebar wiring to the frame.
In fact cut all the cable ties holding any wiring to the frame.

Yea, probably right. The wiring will be so stiff by now the ties are doing nothing...apart from fecking up something!
