Hi all, did any of you hear of the 1150 GS breaking the frame when off road. This quiery is of course relating to the prog that is on tv at the mo.

Is this a possible weakness in the new GS???

Mike.

what do you expect

your having a laugh, of course the frames will break............those great big heavy lardy things all overloaded like that. I mean all the kit they are carrying !!!!!! ...... i'm amazed they will even move, first pothole bound to break something.
Havent you noticed the mobile crane with the support team to keep hoisting em up:D

Dont worry though if you stick to the highways which the lardies are meant for they are superb.......

No more than in any other bike that's carrying half the contents of a house, and then thrown down on the ground at regular intervals.

PS. Is your surname "Warehouse"? :)

Subframes on the older airhead GS's were notorously weak. Most riders had the subframe braced for long overlanding trips when carrying heavey loads or suffered the consequences. The oilheads aren't really much better and when carrying loads of gear flex and sometimes break. Looking at the amount of gear these guys were carrying and the terrain they were riding over I'm surprised thay've only had one subframe break.

Hear the Boys ditched their top boxes to bring the frame damage to an end. Presumeably we'll see in future episodes.

Having said that, the bikes did get some punishment with the weight, although I haven't heard of any other RTW tourists having frames break.

Now please explain me, what is the point of carrying so much weight since they are followed by a mobile BMW dealership?

What is the point of the whole trip made this way in the first place?

1, Because if it gives the impression that their on their own and self sufficient.

2, Seems to me that, even though we were told otherwise, the whole thing was planned as a TV programme from the start. If you just want to make a record of your trip you don't take a whole film crew with you.

The book goes more into the kit that they took. They don't really say as much, but you get the feeling that "next time round" they'd take far less and learnt from their mistakes.

Hat's off to them I say - support crew or no, how many other buggers have done a 113 days in the saddle? Yes - a few hard core guys like "stiking viking" et al, but the rest of us??

Stop whinging

95% of the tricked up GSes on this site never go off hardtop, let alone around the world

I'm thoroughly enjoying the Long Way Round, anyone who thinks they had it easy with support vehicles obviously isn't watching the programme properly ... respect is due ... that terrain is TOUGH know matter what support there was

As stated the reason the subframes broke is that the bikes were hopelessly overloaded ... READ THE BOOK OR WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

GSes on the telly every monday night and still the whinging bleeders cry ...... SHEEESSH

I thought it was that mad Swizz cameraman who had just passed his UK bike test. The group were offroad in Mongolia and Claudio was'n't looking where he was going - hit a big rock and dropped the black GSA. Picked it up Charley jury rigged a repair - they shared some of the luggage and the bike was then ridden many miles the the nearest habitation. Had a local weld the sub frame with electric arc - sorted subframe fried ABS system !

Was the Swiss guy, but only the first breakage. The other two broke later on.

I park on the grass now and again, (only when its dry though!) does that count as off road?:D :D

important update

:D fact is that with the mobile BMW back up they actually had nothing in any of the panniers, well they are actors who always go around with empty cases:shoot:
So this compounds the weakness of these apparently loaded lardy bikes, they had to empty the boxes after the first subframe broke...................... :D I also heard that every night they were helicoptered to the nearest 5 star hotel...........................and the sewrvic`e crew worked all night on the bikes, keeping watch of course:D

............I can tell you that having been at Sonic Communications when this "voyage" was being prepared for the kit, according to the management was ridiculous with everything doubled....all that and the film rights were kept by the two who not only had free GSA and kit also got a wage to do it....oh yeh hardship indeed:eek:

Fascinating. Totally riveting.

Matkat, Aidan and Monty should form a 'jealous gits' club. I'm sure there would be plenty of other takers on this forum, too.

Switch yer telly off if you find it that risible!!
