broken rear subframe

going over the bike as i gave it a wash this afternoon and i have noticed that the mounting for the silencer on the rear subframe has broken off completely Silencer only held in place by the mounting to the y-piece!


Bike is a 2001 GS with just under 60k miles. Std silencer with y piece and road use only. Anyone else suffered the same fracture?

It had happened to mine before I bought it, only had 10,250 miles on it then. Not sure how it happened though.

Check ebay, there's a replacement there for £65 at the mo. Sorry to hear about your woes, at least it might not be too expensive to repair.

Happened mine too. I just welded it up and strengthend it with a bit of metal plate. Happend at 15k got 28 on it now.

at some point, bmw in their wisdom changed from a 3 bolt mounting for the silencer to just the one.

that's a lot of weight hanging off that little mount

Found the thread of my break. I disconected the battery and welded it with a borrowed electric welder and a metal strip beaten with a hammer until it fitted round the bracket Its not pretty but its still fine.

popped in to see a mate who has a welder this morning and 5 minutes, all done.
