Brother MFC3420C fecked

Longshot - have a Brother multifunction fax/scan/printer.

It's died - "Machine Error 41" - appears to be fatal as I cannot get past that to interrogate the fault even after unplugging/restarting it.

Anyone help?

Although Brother multi-function machines look good value, the dreaded error 41 will get you in the end. On these machines, the printhead is a separate unit from the colour cartridges, and eventually needs replacement after one year or eighteen months. The cost for this is way in excess of the original purchase price of the machine.

They seem to have extended the warranty to three years for this fault so you should get a replacement from where you bought it, but some of the replacements have lasted less than six months before the same fault appeared.

Many thanks for such quick and detailed replies.

Sadly the unit is probably out of date and has non-OE inks in it (voids warranty ) so to the bin (or recycling) it goes if my attempt to clean the print head fails.

Very interesting commercial strategy that Brother has though (for those who didn't read Centaur's link, Brother's "self-clean" cycle runs 3/4 times a day and uses a small quantity of each colour each time - result = no ink after weeks = buy more Brother ink = make up losses on selling below cost in the first place!).
